I have removed the column on past departments as titles have changed so many times that we could easily list five/six past names in the case of some departments. Djegan 21:06, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Name changes[edit]

I have a full list of name changes at User:Jnestorius/List of changes in Irish government departments; it also lists a few functional transfers, but not most of them. Garret Fitzgerald has criticised the way it only takes a statutory instrument, as opposed to an act of the Oireachtas, to effectively abolish one department and/or create another, by the legal expedient of renaming, moving all the old functions out, and/or moving a bunch of new functions in. The current Department of Transport is not, legally speaking, the one created in 1959; that was abolished in 1983. The current department was created in 1973 as the Department of Public Service. jnestorius(talk) 20:14, 3 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
