Comment[edit]

I take it that no one knows if there are odd creatures adapted to living in the cavern.174.6.130.25 (talk) 07:48, 29 September 2009 (UTC)BeeCier[reply]

There are bacteria [1] that consume methane, and some live in inhospitable environments (near boiling, acidic water) so I imagine that it isn't impossible. However, the Methane is burning, and burning Methane reaches temperatures around 1949°C [2]. This, to my knowledge, is far too high to support any kind of life. ck (talk) 06:58, 30 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion to rename article or remove it[edit]

I don't think this article should exist (or at least not with this name). Has anyone tried to verify whether Derweze actually exists as a village? I've checked some recent reports from people who have been to the crater and no-one knows of a village nearby - one saying the nearest is Erbent, which is quite far. Considering this article is really more about the crater than the village anyway, I'd suggest renaming it to Darwaza Gas Crater and removing the information about the population. See here a discussion on our wiki about the village for reference: [1] . There's another discussion on Lonely planet's forum which is by another person who saw no village. The references on this page are actually really bad, including one that incorrectly says the crater is in Uzbekistan (englishrussia)! --Daamsie (talk) 11:06, 11 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Back in 2006 there was no sign of a village on the only road passing the area around the crater, which is why we set up camp at a construction site nearby and learnt the exact location from the workers there. Road signs at that time marked the area Darvaza. This is the only place I've seen it referred to as Derweze Swhale (talk) 14:28, 17 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In russian article it is said that "Derweze" is actually pronounced as Darvaza. It says also that Darvaza village was dismantled in 2004. 128.68.76.138 (talk) 07:33, 25 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Credibility[edit]

Seriously English Russia is a major source here? OMG. This article should be nuked. 68.150.45.231 (talk) 18:13, 3 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Coordinate error[edit]

{{geodata-check}} Good morning, The coordinates for Derweze (Darvaza Crater) are shown as 40°11′N 58°24′E which converts to 40.183333, 58.4 decimal degrees. I found the crater on Google Earth at 40.252640, 58.439487, which reconverts to 40°15'8.02"N 58°26'21.16"E. The existing reference is off far enough that locating this landmark using this information was somewhat difficult. A more accurate posted Lat-Long coordinate would be very helpful.
