Missing literal meaning[edit]

This article focuses entirely on the transferred parliamentary sense; you would never know from Wikipedia that a dispatch box (the form the Oxford dictionaries use, by the way) is "a container for state or military dispatches." Languagehat (talk) 15:33, 6 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Gladstone's intention[edit]

Under the heading "History of the box", it states "In the speech, quoting from Virgil’s Georgics, Gladstone expressed his desire to, 'we have sought to do justice to the great labouring community of England by further extending their relief from indirect taxation...'"(emphasis added). The preface "...his desire to..." makes no sense to me. Can someone clear-up what is meant by it or, better yet, rewrite the sentence to make sense?
