Penis jokeDick joke — This article has recently been moved to the name "Penis joke" by Rlsheehan with the edit summary "remove crude title", later blanking the redirect. (The same user also blanked the soft redirect WP:Dick and sought its deletion.) I'm of the opinion the article should be moved back to "Dick joke" because it's: A) a far more common name; and B) Wikipedia is not censored. — – The Parting Glass 17:36, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Survey[edit]

Feel free to state your position on the renaming proposal by beginning a new line in this section with *'''Support''' or *'''Oppose''', then sign your comment with ~~~~. Since polling is not a substitute for discussion, please explain your reasons, taking into account Wikipedia's naming conventions.
  • Oppose. It is a little hard to follow your logic, with your juxtaposition of "from to", and your comment that Wikipedia is not censored. I am not aware of "dick" being a "four letter word", or should I say, a "dirty little word". I would hasten to say that the word penis is far more encyclopedic than dick, which could be a joke about someone named Dick, as in "Tom, Dick and Harry". I would also caution editors to use exact quotes. If someone says "dick joke", that is what their quote should say. If someone walked up to me and asked me if I wanted to hear a "dick joke", my first impression would be that the joke was going to be about a person named Dick, and my second that it was a joke about messing with something ("dicking around"). It would be highly unlikely that human anatomy would occur to me. 199.125.109.126 (talk) 18:07, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • I apologise for the deficiency of my English on this occasion. What I was trying to get across was that "dick joke" is the common term, that "penis joke" is far less common, and that we should not prefer the latter because some might find the former vulgar. As for your thoughts on what you yourself would understand "dick joke" to mean, I find them rather charming – somewhat out of touch with common usage, but charming. – The Parting Glass 19:19, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong support By far the most common name, and Wikipedia is not censored. Looking at the users edits, they seem to just be very prudish. TJ Spyke 18:45, 22 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support and remind the mover that Wikipedia is not censored, and blanking the redirect is not helpful, probably violating WP:POINT as well. 76.66.198.171 (talk) 04:31, 23 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support, article name is defined by its sources. WP should never make 'cosmetic improvements'. MURGH disc. 16:38, 24 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support. Always wear a cup.
  • Strong Support I have NEVER heard anyone call it a "penis joke". I hear it called "dick joke" every single time. Wikipedia isn't censored, and neither is the internet. It is like an edit on an Adam Sandler album, they said "What The Heck Happened To Me?" when the song is titled "What The Hell Happened To Me". I hope the internet isn't taken over by the FCC or cautious smother-like parents. Jackass2009 (talk) 07:29, 25 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

my name[edit]

My name is Dick Joke; and I'm not sure how I feel about this. Ok; fine; it's Richard; but still; I have some thinking to do. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 184.77.162.199 (talk) 04:41, 29 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The Term "Dick Joke" Used Figuratively[edit]

In private conversations among professional comedians, I've heard the term "dick joke" get used to refer to any facile dumb humor that gets dropped in, as dumb *as if* it were literally just dick jokes. Example: In the middle of a conversation with a good and sustained level of humor, someone drops in some just distractingly stupid joke, and then being told "dammit!, why do you always have to go right to the dick joke!?" (when the joke in question wasn't an actual dick joke at all, just dumb and vulgar). Or: "(some name) is a HACK-- He goes up and does eight minutes of dick jokes and he calls that a set!" (...where that might not involve *any* actual dick jokes, but humor about no smarter than a bunch of dick jokes.) Ironically, this entry's example of a dick joke "A professor gives his psychology class a spot quiz..." wouldn't count as a dick joke in the sense I'm talking about-- too much setup, and not broad enough... at all. Also, about as funny as a glacier. Anyway, for my sense of "dick joke", I have no citation whatsoever-- it has come up repeatedly in conversation as a term of jargon, but I'm not putting it in this entry, because, like I say, no citation. But, folks, keep listening, because maybe the sense I'm talking about will show up in some comedian's podcast or something. (I would say "keep an ear cocked!", but please, I have some self-respect! Oh, wait, no, there it went.) —Sburke (talk) 01:41, 4 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Confusion[edit]

The 1973 reference was meant to insunuate storylines unrelated to videos. Maybe I should make that clearer. Let me try to reword it perhaps. Pwolit iets (talk) 01:51, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

For clarity, this is the removed section:
Boner prank

A subset of dick jokes with varying storylines in more contemporary times is the boner prank. The advent and upswing towards this genre of dick jokes has icreased markedly in conjunction with the increasing availability of video-sharing websites. It consists of usually a man appearing with a very noticeable bulge in the crotch region. Scenarios or storylines include those occurring in the midst of a massage,[1] and erections occurring in the midst of an improbable situation.[2]

I'm honestly not sure what "insunuate" means in this context.
The reference to issues 846 through 853 of a publication (with a page number but no mention of article titles or authors) is about as valid a reference as a vague wave towards "the literature." (Please feel free to provide a more specific citation if one exists.) That leaves the 1973 source as the only source supporting the paragraph. In locating appropriate sources, please remember the rules against original research and synthesis. In my opinion, these would require a supporting source to state explicitly that these jokes have become more common in tandem with the popularity of video sharing websites; it's not sufficient to provide sourcing showing these two facts separately, because the conclusion would be improper synthesis. Furthermore, the references would need to give the description of these jokes (a man appearing with an obvious genital bulge). Rebbing 06:43, 29 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Move[edit]

Move dick joke to penis joke. Profanity is unacceptable. 2A02:C7E:3AA0:9200:6D92:A71D:7C09:971D (talk) 20:55, 15 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is not censored. If you're offended, that's your problem. The rest of the world doesn't have to accommodate your Puritanical pearl-clutching over what's "unacceptable" to you. Fuck censorship. kane2742 (talk) 19:56, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

This question has already been well settled by the move request discussion up the page. Any editor can file another move request seeking to reverse that outcome, but frankly it would be a waste of time trying to overcome the clear common name here. BD2412 T 21:42, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
