Crown Colony[edit]

Proposal to merge Crown Colony into this article

I would not support the proposal to merge Crown Colony with Direct Rule, two separate and distinct subjects. Justin talk 16:00, 3 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I would also oppose the proposal, as direct rule has often been imposed on territories that are not Crown colonies. The Turks and Caicos Islands, which are currently (as of 2009) under direct rule, is a British Overseas Territory for example. 84.92.117.93 (talk) 00:04, 17 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Support, I feel the main difference is the point of history when this occurred. Just as the role of the Monarchy has evolved, the meaning of "Crown" has likewise shifted. I think that since much of the real power in the United Kingdom has evolved (from Monarch to Parliament), these two terms are largely synonymous now.

One can consider the modern evolution of following similar terms:

Crown Copyright - A government copyright.
Crown Corporation - A government business entity.
Crown Debt - Government owed debt.
Crown Dependency - A dependency where the British Governor has the most responsibility.
Crown Lands - Government owned lands. (parks, reservations, etc.)
Crown attorney/Crown prosecutor - A government legal advisor.
Prerogative of the Crown - The government's decision to do something. (Esp. since the Monarch now by-convention abides by the decisions of the government served.)
If someone is imprisoned they are considered property of "The Crown" (government), not literally the monarch any longer.

The Turks and Caicos situation is roughly the same thing as when territories are changed to Crown colonies. It is the same basic process to bring about stricter controls and oversight when a territory isn't quickly moving in the correct desired direction of The Crown.
