Ranking of divisions[edit]

is this ranking necessary in this manner? Rather, a sortable table with important data (population, area, districts, upazillas, town, cities) of each divisions might be added. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nafsadh (talkcontribs) 15:39, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Division Headquarters or Capital?[edit]

Bangladesh government do not refer to its district and division heads as capital, but the terms are headquarters:

  • The eponymous Upazilla is called Sadar (সদর). e.g. Tangail Sadar Upazilla in Tangail district
  • The district administrative offices are called জেলা সদর - District Headquarters
  • The divisional administrative offices are called বিভাগীয় সদর - Divisional Headquarters

In most Wikipedia articles about these uses the word: capital, but it should not be so. Thus, I am inviting contributors to comment. --» nafSadh did say 19:18, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A sadar is a district administrative center, like a county seat or a county town (an upazila/sub-district town is not a sadar, but rather like a civil parish or township).
Now, any city which is an official seat of administration can be termed a capital. In the case of Bangladesh's divisions, the cities which host their administrative headquarters should certainly be termed as divisional capitals. In all cases, these cities are the largest urban, commercial and industrial centers of their divisions. They preside over territories with millions in population.--Rainmaker23 (talk) 22:20, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Sadar has two meaning, per se, (1) district admin center, and (2) the seat (town/upazilla) of the aforementioned
Capital usually associates with state or province. Bangladesh have a unitary governing system. Government documents do not use capital to refer any place other than Dhaka.
Use of the word capital has a connotation that divisions enjoy provincial status, which it do not. Moreover, in practice, division simply function as a group of districts rather than a real layer. The capital (Dhaka) interacts more frequently with district officials than the division officials.
I am using the phrase seat for headquarters in Rajshahi article, which I think is better suited. --» nafSadh did say 22:42, 22 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • I think we should go with what the official government portals on the divisional cities term them. --Zayeem (talk) 16:18, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Official portals use "headquarters". --» nafSadh did say 18:20, 23 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
"Any city which is an official seat of administration can be termed a capital." - ridiculous rationale. It's like telling that "any person who belongs to the species Homo sapiens can be called a primate." Wikipedia does not operate on what can be, it runs on is. I don't thnik anyone tried to call them capitals instead of headquarters before Rainmaker did. No use continuing this ridiculous discussion. Aditya(talkcontribs) 04:47, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Look Aditya I don't have to go by (Personal attack removed). Japan is a unitary state where district towns are prefecture capitals, so is France with its departmental capitals. If anyone is ridiculous here it is you people.--Rainmaker23 (talk) 15:50, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Please be nice Rainmaker23. --» nafSadh did say 21:02, 24 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • In Bangladesh; no other administrative area or office is called a capital except Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh. Bangladesh do not follow a Federal government system. It is better to use the official terms to avoid confusion. --Rossi101 (talk) 20:14, 24 August 2014 (UTC)Rossi101[reply]
