Untitled[edit]

There is a DIYbio page in addition to this page. One should link to the other or they should be combined. I am not Wikipedia-savvy enough to do this. Can someone help? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Freeze188 (talkcontribs) 17:03, 16 June 2010‎ (UTC)[reply]

DIYbio is a specific network, DIY biology describes a general movement or idea. Two different things and therefore should not merge. Hzh (talk) 21:21, 12 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 17 June 2016[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review. No further edits should be made to this section.

The result of the move request was: not moved. There is a consensus that the two topics should not be covered in one article and that this subject is not the primary topic for the term "biohacking". Jenks24 (talk) 07:40, 25 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Do-it-yourself biologyBiohacking – The movement, do it yourself biology is out of date and since at least 2013 has been replaced by the term biohacking(Google trends reference(https://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=DIY%20bio%2C%20biohacking%2C%20%2Fm%2F05zn9vc&cmpt=q&tz=Etc%2FGMT%2B7). Organizations like motherboard even use the tag(http://motherboard.vice.com/tag/biohacking). Though Biohacking can refer to body modification and genetic engineering of organisms. The fields are coalescing to allow a broad but connected subject not necessarily requiring two different pages. – 2602:306:BC06:F520:F8E6:B024:B7B8:74EC (talk) 15:44, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This is a contested technical request (permalink). Anthony Appleyard (talk) 17:43, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Instead of being a disambig page it can combine the two topics into one page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2602:306:BC06:F520:F8E6:B024:B7B8:74EC (talk) 18:49, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
They look rather distinct topics, so that would not be very useful. --JorisvS (talk) 19:28, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • My concern with using "biohacking" is that it is less clear when one is not familiar with the topic. --JorisvS (talk) 19:28, 17 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support: per WP:COMMONAME. Ebonelm (talk) 00:54, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose: "Biohacking" is ambiguous because it could refer to either DIY biology or grinder body modification community, which have little or no overlap. I did a relatively thorough Google trawl fairly recently (October 2015) and couldn't find any sources that discussed both communities in the same article, except for this one which specifically mentions the weakness of the connection. There are also sources that state that "biohacking" is not a universally accepted term in DIY biology (as late as 2011 at least, I'll have to check if there are any more recent sources). Also, the Motherboard articles linked above are almost exclusively about body modification, not DIY biology. This move and the recent changes to the article by the IP need to be backed up by sources rather than direct familiarity with the field. Antony–22 (talkcontribs) 01:54, 18 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose for reasons above. And, while appreciating the new additions, I would suggest User talk:2602:306:BC06:F520:F8E6:B024:B7B8:74EC to restore the sources and parts he as deleted that turn the article in one specific on biohacking. --Robertiki (talk) 12:23, 20 June 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Is this concept sufficiently distinct from Do-it-yourself biology? The contents would appear to fit within the bounds of summary style, given the existing subsection. czar 22:50, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thereiissa lot to say about this topic and it is certainly distinct because most sources don't mention diy biology. (t · c) buidhe 22:55, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Many of the sources in this article do not mention "DIY biology" either since that phrase is just the umbrella term Wikipedia uses. More broadly, both forms are "biohacking". The focus on self-administered medicine and healthcare surely falls within that scope. czar 23:30, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think so.
Biohacking is "defined as the attempt to manipulate your brain and body in order to optimize performance, outside the realm of traditional medicine". Typical goals include cognitive improvement, life extension (which are not treatment for medically recognized diseases); methods include diet, supplements and others that don't generally involve a doctor to access.
DIY medicine article focuses on.people who have a specific medical condition that is usually treated by a doctor, but the person decides to manage it themselves. I haven't seen that called "biohacking". (t · c) buidhe 03:32, 20 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose. DIY medicine is too long to be merged in my opinion. Queen of Hearts ❤️ (she/they 🎄 🏳️‍⚧️) 19:15, 26 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Oppose per Queen of Hearts.--Launchballer 11:47, 20 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
