Move discussion[edit]

No, the field and stadium as a whole take on a new name once you name the field. Just like at the Univeristy of Florida's "Ben Hill Griffin Stadium at Florida Field", and Georgia Tech's "Bobby Dodd Stadium at Historic Grant Field". AriGold 12:25, 22 Jun 2005 (UTC)

I would still say the field is a distinct entity. It doesn't appear on any signs either, for what that's worth.
Wrong. I guess you didn't go to the stadium much. There is a giant garnet sign in the stadium, with gold lettering that reads "Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium". Or shouldn't it be called The University Center, The School of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts, The University Center Club, Department of Hospitality Administration, College of Social Work, Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium....? No, the field was named by the Florida Legislature, in Senate Bill 2316 in the 2000 Session, "Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium", not "The University Center, The School of Motion Picture, Television and Recording Arts, The University Center Club, Department of Hospitality Administration, College of Social Work, Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium". "The" Florida State University and Clevelandguy's claim that it's not in the "legal name"[edit]

See FSU's webpage, that begins it's history with "The Florida State University, one of the largest and oldest of the ten institutions of higher learning in the State University System of Florida, had its beginning as early as 1823 when the Territorial Legislature began to plan a higher education system." as well as "The year 1947 saw many changes. Demand by returning World War II veterans had brought men back to the campus in 1946 with the establishment of the Tallahassee Branch of the University of Florida, and on May 15, 1947, the Governor signed an act of the Legislature returning Florida State College for Women to coeducational status and naming it The Florida State University. Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium → Doak Campbell Stadium – The common name for this stadium remains "Doak Campbell Stadium". "Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium" is the long (and cumbersome) official name, which doesn't matter much for Wikipedia's purposes. "Doak Campbell Stadium" -llc -wikipedia returns 643 Google Books hits, versus only 6 for "Bobby Bowden Field at Doak Campbell Stadium" -llc -wikipedia. Google news is similar; the shorter name returns 309 articles, versus none for the long name. The Google News archives, even since the longer name was adopted in 2004, still overwhelmingly prefer the shorter name, returning 1,860 sources since 2004 versus 33 for the longer name. The official name can be explained in the text, and I'd recommend leaving it in the lead.--Cúchullain t/c 15:59, 28 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dual naming of athletic venues seems to be an increasing trend, likely due to the sponsorship opportunities involved, but it's very hard to imagine the longer names gaining much purchase in everyday parlance.
