English footballer or US soccer player?[edit]

Now that he's become a US citizen, and may play with the US national team[1], should we update the language? Seems like this article now meets the "strong national ties" criteria to the US, not the British, language variety. Rks13 (talk) 16:04, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

He's not considered American. The order, as I understand it based on WP:FOOTY convention is 1) nation played for, 2) nation of birth. Adopting a new nation is not a reason to change the lede. So he's still English as he has not renounced his British citizenship. He's still an English footballer and there is no need to update it. Walter Görlitz (talk) 16:19, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I think he has renounced his British citizenship as part of getting US citizenship, and it seems he's about to play for the US national team. I'm happy to wait for that to happen, but I think it's going to happen soon. At that point, by my understanding, we should change the article. Am I missing something? One can be a dual citizen of Britain and the US. If you can find a source to support that he has renounced it, then the decision is easy. If he is given playing time in a recognized FIFA match, that makes the decision easy as well: he is recognized as an American. Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:26, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
He's on the US roster for the Gold Cup.[2] I have not pushed the argument, but I think that it is about over. I don't understand the resistance to updating his profile, but, if and when he steps on the field for the US team, I plan to remake the article significantly. I investigated the issue of hyphenated nationalities, and the best I could find were (1) a clear statement in WP:OPENPARA that states: "Similarly, previous nationalities or the place of birth should not be mentioned in the lead unless they are relevant to the subject's notability." (2) the footnote in the player template[1], which makes indirect reference to a couple articles containing similar arguments, in which early editors unilaterally pronounced that players should never have hyphenated nationalities. I think WP:OPENPARA is the ruling authority, not the footnotes in the player template. So, now, is Dwyer's English birth relevant? Many, many editors think so. If you want to make a clear, compelling argument that it is not relevant, go ahead, but the evidence (many editors adding "English-" to the text) so far argues that it is relevant. Until somebody makes the argument that all these editors are wrong about the relevance of Dwyer's English birth, I believe the article should keep the hyphenated nationality in the lead.
