SW1200RS diesel units[edit]

The article states that: The railway experimented with two diesel-electric ALCO S-3 switchers for several months, which were placed in service on July 1, 1956. Steam locomotives were not displaced until the arrival of ten EMD SW1200RS road switchers in April 1956. The SW1200RS' replaced the S-3's, and all but one steam locomotive, which was retained for a short time.

It is well documented that these units, class DRS-12b, were not even built until 1959. The S-3s served until the SW1200RS units arrived (8131-8140) and then the S-3s were sent to Thunder Bay and later to Moose Jaw where they were scrapped in the early 80's. The earliest known photo I have of these units confirms this and noted authority and author Gary W. Ness reports in his book "Canadian Pacific's Dominion Atlantic Railway - Vol I, page 20 and page 21" the same adding that the units did not arrive all at once but over several weeks starting with the first units arriving on the last Monday of April 1959. The last remaining steam unit was 2209 being retained to steam heat the conventional coaches and was scrapped in February 1961.

Discussion?

Yes. First the 6560 and 6561 were built by MLW not Alco. They were of course Alco design. They were especially equipped for road service including m.u., class lights, chime airhorn, and combination pilots; and were heavily weighted to greatly improve tractive effort. They were replaced by SW1200RS units and were then sent to Toronto for individual use on local jobs out of Lambton Yard. Later they went to work the Pulldown at the new hump yard after it opened in April of 1964. —Preceding unsigned comment added by R.L.Kennedy (talkcontribs) 00:36, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
