Both the Rev and his sister, my gt gt grandmother were christianed Stewart after their father Alexander Stewart NOT Stuart. Stuart versus Stewart[edit]

From the book, the Dalmeny family of John and Jane, Macnab Stuart/Stewart : John Stuart changed the spelling of his surname to Stewart after coming to Osgoode Township. In the cemetery in Kenmore Scotland where his parents are buried, once again the inscription Alexander STUART and wife Janette appears. John had a twin brother Donald McNaughton STUART, D. D., Minister of Knox Church, Dunedin, New Zealand, from 1860 until his death 1895 and the STUART spelling is maintained there in Osgoode Township, there was only one post office, Osgoode post office at Metcalf corner at the home of Daniel Cameron, and there was another John STUART, son, of James and Catherine STUART, receiving mail there - it is probable that our John had brought some of his grandfather‘s money with him as his name is found on many mortgages on property throughout Osgoode Township. He was using the STEWART in order to avoid confusion and to protect his privacy. But some of the children and grandchildren continued with the original spelling. The family in California returned to STUART after the death of their father.
