Stirner Connection

The article currently states that the "New Freewoman" title was not changed to "The Egoist" in recognition of Max Stirner's philosophy. This directly contradicts Michael Levenson's, Vincent Sherry's, and David Kadlec's claims. All of them are fairly major figures in modernist scholarship, and I'm pretty sure I've seen the connection referenced elsewhere. Does anyone know where the claim in the article might have come from? No source is given, and the edit history shows that it has been in the text from the beginning. It doesn't look like anyone even bothers popping in here more than once every year or two, so if I don't hear back in a while, I'll just change the claim. 71.81.134.185 (talk) 07:04, 10 June 2010 (UTC)MOB

Marsden said in relation to the proposed name change: Although THE NEW FREEWOMAN has been in existence only six months, it has become clear that its present title can be regarded only as a serious handicap. It contrives to suggest what the paper is not, and fails to give any indication whatsoever as to what it is. The implications following upon this suggested false identity are so clearly indicated in a letter addressed to us by a group of contributors, to whose generous support the paper has owed much from its start, that we may allow it to state this aspect of the case, and in publishing the letter we take the opportunity of acknowledging the courtesy of its authors. It runs:

" We, the undersigned men of letters who are grateful to you for establishing an organ in which men and women of intelligence can express themselves without regard to the public, venture to suggest to you that the present title of the paper causes it to be confounded with organs devoted solely to the advocacy of an unimportant reform in an obsolete political institution. We therefore ask with great respect that you should consider the advisability of adopting another title which will mark the character of your paper as an organ of individualists of both sexes, and of the individualist principle in every department of life.

I suspect that Marsden picked up the term "Egoist" from Benjamin Tucker, who translated Stirner's book in 1907. However, I would suggest — regarding the above explanation, and considering Marsden's character — that Marsden felt this was the most philosophically appropriate and representative term for her own unique position, and not intended to be read as a pointed reference to Stirner. 86.164.86.232 (talk) 18:46, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

New edits

Hi, I've just finished a decently large bit of research into Marsden, so I decided I might be able to lend a hand with a serious overhaul of this page. I'm a rank novice at serious edits; I've copy-edited and fact-checked pages before, but I didn't even have an account, so this is the first time I've really dug in. I've done my best to learn the relevant rules, but, if I'm violating any protocol along the way, please let me know (not too viciously, I hope) so I can learn. For now, I've cleaned up the lead-in line and added one of those author boxes you see in other articles. Going forward, I'd like to clean up the style and grammar a bit in the "early life" section; someone or ones added a bunch of great info compared to where this page was at a few years ago, but some of there are some sentence-level errors, and stylistic oddities (such as saying "Dora Marsden" repeatedly instead of reverting to just "Marsden"). In addition, while Garner and Clarke remain the most comprehensive biographical sources, there are several other well-respected sources that have been published more recently, and I intend to bring in some material from there. The sections about her journals could be fleshed out and written in a slightly more narrativized form, and, quite frankly, some of the facts aren't quite right. Anyway, I imagine I'll be pecking away at this bit by bit, and I'd appreciate any feedback or help. Bercreaup (talk) 04:13, 3 March 2014 (UTC)
