No connection, apparently. The suffix 'chester' (and related terms such as 'caster' and 'cester') is common in English place names, deriving ultimately from the Latin 'castrum', meaning an army encampment. The Anglo-Saxons used it as part of their place names for many towns of Roman origin, such as Chester, Manchester, Lancaster, Leicester, Colchester, Winchester, Cirencester, and others. The 'Dor' part of the name of Dorchester in Dorset comes from the Roman or pre-Roman name of the inhabitants, but the 'Dor' in the Oxfordshire Dorchester has an unknown origin. Hyphenated or not?[edit]

"Dorchester on Thames" or "Dorchester-on-Thames"? Is there an officially preferred version of the name? Of course, instances of both usages can be found. But my question is about whether one is more official than the other. Feline Hymnic (talk) 16:55, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

South Oxfordshire District Council seem not to use hyphens in titles of documents e.g. [1], though they do appear in documents filled in by individuals e.g. [2]. The roadsign is hyphenless, whereas Oxford University have used them, and the Ordnance Survey eschews suffixes altogether - not much help here.
It probably doesn't matter too much, though I'd be inclined to not use them, as per the local website that seems to have connections to the parish council [3], though I note that it's not uniform even here - see the picture caption here. PaleCloudedWhite (talk) 17:55, 13 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
