In Hockey[edit]

The double in hockey is to win both the olympic gold and the world championhip in the same year. Sweden did this in 2006.

Contradiction[edit]

I would correct this, but I can't be arsed:

"A unique double was also achieved by Arsenal in 1993 when they won both the FA Cup and the League Cup in the same season.... The feat of winning both the FA Cup and League Cup in the same season was also achieved by Liverpool in 2001"

Split article[edit]

I moved the section on other sports to The Double (Other). The Double is notable enough in the world of football to warrant its own article, free from the mention of other sports. Kronix1986 02:48, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Double = the English league + FA Cup[edit]

I removed references to "near doubles" featuring the League Cup (aka the Carling/Worthington/Coca-Cola Cup). The English Double is the league and the FA Cup. The League Cup doesn't come into the equation. Kronix1986 02:55, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Quadruple?[edit]

Delete this paragraph?[edit]

Delete this paragraph? "near european doubles?"[edit]

This potentially gives a very long list including every team that has won the european cup but not won their domestic league in the same season Every Champions League runner up that either finshed 1st or second.

IMHO this would be a very long and not very illuminating list. I'm going to delete the paragraph as it stands but if somebody is feeling ultra keen..... (Statto999 (talk) 00:19, 22 May 2008 (UTC))[reply]

American Doubles?[edit]

Did someone delete the paragragh refering to D.C. United winning the American Double (MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup) in 1996? That is sigificant as that is the first U.S. club to do so. 70.240.109.225 (talk) 18:39, 31 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

LOL well what can you do it is MLS but still good. However, it should fall under Other Countries not Domestic Cup Doubles, as the MLS Cup is the league championship and the U.S. Open is the domestic cup. Also, Chicago Fire did the same in 1998, I will try to fix it if you feel that the paragraph belongs under Other Countries. Also, I want to get some consesus on another club. UNAM Pumas of the Mexican League won the Clausura 2004 and Apertura 2004 championships. Mexico splits their seasons into two tournamets, and follows the FIFA calendar. Article improvement[edit]

This is a statement of intent for future changes:

I will look to improve this article in future to complement the Treble (association football) article. I hope to narrow the scope, removing aspects such as "doing the double over a team in the season": such information in not only hard to complete a list of, but it is also pretty dull, trivial information. I intend to refocus the article—looking at these doubles: "League and Cup", "League and League Cup", "Cup double", "European double" (European Cup/CL and League) and "International double".

I will search for references to see whether the name "The Double" is accurate to describe just the League and Domestic Cup double. I intend to redress the current imbalance and bias, moving away from the Anglo-centric point of view. However, I hope to maintain the position of Preston and Villa's doubles as the first football doubles, giving the topic some historical context. I will reorganise related content into tables, organised into sortable tables (which will be able to list doubles by: alphabetical order, country, number of double victories, and date of first double victory). It should essentially be a collection of better versions of this table. Any extra prose information should be signified in the table notes as on Treble (association football)

The importance of "other doubles" should be assessed: I recommend that doubles including trophies won over one or two legs should be discounted for reasons of brevity. The "Near doubles" section looks like it could become unsustainable, given the number of occurrences. This should be discussed. I'd much appreciate help, thoughts and opinions on these matters. I think that's pretty much the best I can do. I don't think sort tables work with col spans. Or at least they never do for tech dunces such as myself. Good work on sorting out the tables. ...there's no mention of Scottish Football. Haven't Rangers and Celtic both done Double?

Country links when double not possible[edit]
