Notable?[edit]

I guess he's notable if you're a "media theorist", and "deconstruct" and actualize and really care about the MEEDIIIA and corporatism and so on and on. Ooh, currency has gradually centralized over time! Let me ponder that for some years, and receive an award for it. Perhaps I can involve my distinguished colleague, Genesis P-Orridge? Yeah, yeah, sue me, it gets a little too clever. When I write a book, I'm going to explicitly state that I wrote it to make money, and see what happens. Also, I'm going to incorporate. Dammit. The thing is, I have heard of him, because I'm as clever as he is. I am sorry for whatever I did to offend you. I didn't write my own Wikipedia article, though I do think I could do a good and fair job. I'd love it to be straightforward and neutral. I don't think the fact that it mentions my origins in the cyberpunk/psychedelic era of the net to be biased.
I do think Netscape going public in 1994 was a turning point, as do many others. So was the purchase of Time/Warner by AOL. DouglasRushkoff (talk) 22:01, 1 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Comment on notability[edit]

I hate to ask, but how is this "Douglas Rushkoff" person notable at all? I haven't heard about this person at all (to the degree that I assumed 1960-something was the year of his death, not birth), and frankly, what's up on the page doesn't sound ... well, encyclopedia-worthy.

Another problem with the article: it's heavily edited by Mr. Rushkoff himself. As a result, it reads more like an advertisement for all the things he has been involved in, as you can see from the sheer number of external links that lead to his own website. (Most articles contain external links in the section at the end, but Mr. Rushkoff didn't have the decency to follow the custom.)

I would suggest the article for deletion, but then, I don't want to be counted among the deletionists. I just don't like seeing self-promotion on the Wikipedia, especially by a political person. novakyu (talk) 12:30, 7 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

To address your concern about notability: he is an author who has published multiple, nontrivial books, most of them from major trade publishers (ie not self published and not from obscure publishers). It will be a trivial, but time consuming, and eventually necessary matter, to provide references showing his works have been discussed in multiple forums. as of the date of the paperback publication of "nothing sacred", he was a commentator at NPR's all things considered. Add to this the other credits as listed on the book, he easily qualifies for an article, as do a number of his books. Yes, an editor named rushkoff has edited extensively here. That means there is a potential conflict of interest, and the material added should be checked for its accuracy and degree of controversy. subjects can always add noncontroversial material to their article, but should always strive to provide the references to support it. I may attempt to help this article, but even if i dont, this note should help other editors to focus on it and not worry about AFD's or automatic removal of all content added by the likely mr rushkoff himself.Mercurywoodrose (talk) 03:26, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I agree the article reads as if it was written by the subject himself. Surely someone cares about Mr. Rushkoff besides Mr. Rushkoff himself. This person, should s/he ever be found, should rewrite this article from a neutral point of view. 50.0.36.208 (talk) 15:32, 24 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed; though other (presumably different) editors have contributed, it still reads like a list of name-droppings and edgy article subjects rather than a list of accomplishments and contributions to society. A rewrite from an interested and knowledgeable party other than the subject himself would be good. He's got 381 Twitter followers; maybe one of them? Calbaer (talk) 06:27, 21 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One possibility here would be to start with the June 2009 version of the page. The subject of the article deleted this (!), gradually replacing it with his own text, starting here, his first non-test contribution. All non-test contributions made by him as editor of Wikipedia were made within a three-week period and only to his article. Much of this remains as is, though enough is sufficiently different that only a dedicated editor would attempt restarting from 2009 and trying to add only info from non-COI parties. Religious views[edit]

I just removed the claim that Rushkoff is an atheist. The source provided did indeed support that, but it was from 2006. In a recent Freakonomics podcast, Rushkoff states "I don’t know if there’s a god or not". That suggests that either he was being hyperbolic in the original source, or that he has since changed his view and become agnostic. Since this is a WP:BLP, and since the word "agnostic" means different things to different people, it's probably safest that we simply make no claim about his personal views on God at all for the time being. Douglas Rushkoff’s brother[edit]

The article mentions Rushkoff’s mother and father, but not his only sibling. I am his older brother, Bennett. I became a lawyer and am now serving as an administrative law judge in Washington, D.C. oah.dc.gov/biography/Bennett-Rushkoff. Brushkoff (talk) 16:58, 27 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
