Figurative Language?[edit]

I'm not 100% sure if this can be taken as fact, but my language arts teacher mentioned that Hawthorne's works such as Dr. Heidegger's Experiment can be interpreted figuratively to change the meaning. When we went over this story in class, she said that the story was actually about Dr. Heidegger giving his friends plain liquor and them believing it was working. Nationalistic period?[edit]

The article says this story "reflects the Nationalistic period, where the strange and picturesque were incorporated in many of the authors of the time." Which Nationalistic period does this refer to? I'm presuming it's something to do with America, but I'm sort of confused because nationalism implies something to do with politics. Kennard2 00:21, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Characters?[edit]

I'm curious as to the validity of character descriptions. For example, the story never specifically says how Mr. Medbourne comes to lose his money, aside from that it was due to frantic speculation. Reliability[edit]

The reliability of the page on a whole seems debatable. In the intro, it says something about the short being first published in "twice told stories," then, in the notes it claims it were published elsewhere.
