Clean Up

Okay, I know everyone did a lot of work this article. But it seems like we have to much information so we need to cut off what is not needed. So any suggestion in order to get that mark off the article?--Link25 09:17, 19 May 2006 (UTC)

The Lord High Priest And Abbot Francisco

This page is wrong about how LHP and Francisco died. LHP was murderd by Marchello while Francisco died a matyred death when thinking that the godess would protect him used his own body to shield Trode to save him from being gored only to gored himself.

I have no argument about that. If the change is needed then go ahead. I beleive that face must be altered. --Link25 10:53, 16 June 2006 (UTC)

I don't write very often so not only am I prone to spell words incorectly but I'm also lowsy at writing things such as reviews and reports. But if anyone wants me to, I can note the mistakes, correct them and then someone could change the review using those notes. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 203.184.58.66 (talkcontribs) .

Moving the chracters?

Most of the page is made of up of the chracters in the game. While I am happy that there has been so much progress in this department, it's pretty much the only thing that has ben worked on. I think we should move the chracters to their own page and work on more general information on the game itself.--Link25 08:10, 7 April 2006 (UTC)

Ok, i just did this NapoleonicStudent 06:26, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

I did a COMPLETE revision of the characters

This is what I did:

1) I moved all the character info to a new page, [1].

2) I left short character info on the main page for only those characters who are introduced at the beginning of the game.

I did this because:

a) Having the complete character bios on the Dragon Quest VIII wikipedia page essentially SPOILS every major surprise of the game.

b) It cleans up and shortens the article.

NapoleonicStudent 06:38, 17 September 2006 (UTC)

quick question

the skeleton enemies - are they in any other DQ game than the first and the eigth? awesome inclusion of the shadow skeleton enemy, too.-Nod 03:11, 28 February 2006 (UTC)

Yeah they appear in other games, while I can't name them on the top of my head, eight and one are not the only cameos for them . --Link25 21:41, 27 March 2006 (UTC)

Classic Skeleton sprites also appear in DQ IV. Whatocean 11:03, 24 September 2006 (UTC)

Title

Shouldn't this article be at Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King since that is the correct title? TJ Spyke 23:20, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

It could be. -- ReyBrujo 23:25, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
I mean, there are articles like Lufia II: Rise of the Sinistrals, but most times you would want the article in the most common name. In example, people are more likely to type Dragon Quest VIII than the full title. -- ReyBrujo 23:31, 26 September 2006 (UTC)
If the page was moved, "Dragon Quest VIII" would automatically redirect to the correct page. Is there any objection to moving it? TJ Spyke 23:34, 26 September 2006 (UTC)

Spoilers in the character page

Hey guys. I don't know about you, but I hate spoilers. And that "List of DQ VIII characters" article is very cool and provides insight to all our favorite characters, but I think the details of the marriage at the end of the game need to go.
I know, it's part of the Hero and Medea's character histories. But there are quite a few links to this spoiler-filled page, mostly made by me. I'd relish in the fact that a person who'd want to discover more about the game would learn through the character bios. But I don't want any newbies to be spoiled about the game's ending.
I propose a separate area for the details of epilogue. We don't have to abolish the info completely, but we should take it out of the character bios where people can be spoiled. I'll do the work. Just tell me what you think. I'll wait about 10 days.
-- Whatocean 10:14, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Eh, you know what? Never mind. Every other video game character list spoils anyway.
-- Whatocean 14:19, 25 November 2006 (UTC)

Monster Arena

Surely a bit more on the Monster Arena is required, or at least a character biography for Morrie. Has anyone else noticed that Morrie is a reference to Mario? For instance, not only does he speak with an Italian accent, he is referred to by a bartender at the arena as Super Morrie-O. Is that just too pointless to include? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Surlysearle (talkcontribs) .

LOL, that's genius! I think I might get to a section on the Monster Arena.

--- Whatocean 10:22, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

While the italian accent was used in the translation, the original one was an eccentric who used english words in every phrase. If a reference to Mario at all, that'd be only on the localization. Icecypher 00:28, 16 March 2007 (UTC)

Other Dragon Quest games on Wiki

Hello, guys. Since this is the Dragon Quest page with the most activity I thought I could ask this here. The rest of the Dragon Quest games need help so their articles can grow, and not only that, but also have sources referenced in their articles. Help in those pages will be really appreciated, since you'll be showing love to the series that spawned this game. Thanks in advance. Icecypher 21:04, 6 June 2007 (UTC)

Soundtrack

I bought the soundtrack, and the tunes are from the original japanese verison (not orchestrated) and there is much more tracks than stated (23 for the first disc, 40 for the second disc). I'd like to know if the list here on the page is from another soundtrack involving the orchestrated version (like in the NA/PAL version).85.2.38.163 20:26, 10 June 2007 (UTC)

Question about two formerly-used images

Image:Dq8alchemy.jpg and Image:Dq8battle.jpg - are these needed? They are currently not used in the article, and if they remain unused, they will likely be deleted (as non-free content is not to remain unused, see WP:NFCC for details). --Iamunknown 06:20, 24 September 2007 (UTC)

Since theyre not being used, i guess we dont need them right now. Besides, if they get deleted, we can always just find replacements if we decide we do in fact need them. Evaunit666 01:12, 25 September 2007 (UTC)

Nice job with all that story info! Though, it might actually be too long (Wikipedia doesn't like a lot "video game cruft"). I'm not saying get rid of it, but it might look better if the huge piles of text were broken up with some pictures. References also help, especially in a story section. That makes an article look really professional. : ) Evaunit♥666♥ 02:01, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the praise Evaunit666;and it may need cropping as it is rather large the plot line.I don't really care if anyone shortens the plot as long as they keep certain parts of the storyline in to keep the plot's shape in order.User:Agent008,4th May 2008 AD;10:42 PM. —Preceding comment was added at 21:42, 4 May 2008 (UTC)

Yangus

According to the Japanese article, he refers to the hero as "aniki" (roughly "older brother") and Trode as "otsu-san" (roughly "mister strange" according to the Japanese-English dictionary I'm using, and "the old boy" according to babelfish) in the Japanese version. I couldn't find anything about his catch phrase. Does anyone have a citeable source for his catchphrase or nicknames for the hero and Trode in the Japanese version? -- Gordon Ecker (talk) 06:01, 19 July 2008 (UTC)

Marta

"It is never explained why she was the holder of the bloodline and not her biological son." I think that sentence should be removed. It's like saying why Jessica isn't an heir when she and Alistair are siblings. Leopold even says, "I smell Sage's blood, but he is not the one." when the group is cornered by wolves.

It's never explained why Alistair is heir and Jessica isn't either. It just may be arbitrary. The last person in the legacy to retain the chromosomes of a sage??? Nah, I don't want to go into heredity and genealogy. It gets confusing.

--- Whatocean 10:20, 12 November 2006 (UTC)

Actually, it KIND-OF explains why marta's the sage. It's because her son(name escapes me), rejected his traditional place by going to orktusk to help the people by directly becoming village doctor, instead of guarding the family shrine.

Alistair is the sage simply because he's the older one, therefore making his heir the next sage instead of jessica(but he has no heir) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 63.3.18.1 (talk) 02:10, 27 July 2008 (UTC)

GA Review

This review is transcluded from Talk:Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King/GA1. The edit link for this section can be used to add comments to the review.

There are quite a few issues, which for the most part I have written below. Feel free to mark which ones you've addressed.

MoS issues
  • The lead is too long per WP:LEAD and with respect to the overall length of the article. Please try to cut it down to about two (or three) paragraphs.
Prose issues
  • For me, it would make more sense that "Plot" would come before "Characters" (at least after having read it) as the most basic descriptions of the characters are already given, which allows those descriptions to be further elaborated in the following "Characters" section.
  • In the "Characters" subsection, Other non-player characters assist the protagonists in their struggles and are both prominent characters - "prominent characters" seem a bit indicative of original research here, at least how that's worded. Can that be tweaked so it sounds a bit more neutral?
  • In the "Reception" section, Released for the PlayStation 2 on November 27, 2004 in Japan, Dragon Quest VIII went on to ship over three million copies within its first week, making it the fastest selling Japanese PlayStation 2 title ever. - please clarify more instead of saying "ever", which sounds a tad weaselish and ambiguous. Is it still currently the fastest-selling PS2 title? Was it the fastest-selling PS2 title at the time?
  • In the "Reception section, However, several critics pointed out that it works for Dragon Quest VIII. - What works for Dragon Quest VIII? The simplicity? Gameplay? You need to be more specific here.
Verifiability issues

Please source the following sections with reliable sources, or alternatively, remove them (they have all been marked with {{fact}} tags for ease of locating them):

  • In the "Gameplay" section,
    • The game even records the distance travelled on a battle statistics page. - is completely unsourced. (It also needs to be rewritten, if you decide to keep it in and source, as it sounds rather weaselish.)
    • Both the Hero's party and the enemies have different animations for their attacks, based on whether they are attacking with a weapon or spell or other special ability. - also unsourced.
  • In the "Development and release" section,
    • In 2003, Square Enix registered the Dragon Quest trademark in the US, making the Dragon Warrior name obsolete. Thus, this installment of the series was the first after 2003 to be released outside of Japan and to receive the Quest in its title.
    • The European version did not contain a Final Fantasy XII demo.
  • All of the content after the first sentence in the "Voice actors" subsection is completely unsourced and also looks like original research.
  • I don't think the netjak.com (#17) source would be considered a reliable source. I looked on that website, and I can't find any evidence of fact-checking and accuracy present.
  • The very last source given in the article (#38) doesn't look like it's reliable; that is, it looks like it's self-published.
Original research issues

In the "Reception" section, A staple to the Dragon Quest series is its simplicity, which is often called into question. - I'm not quite sure that's what the staff in the source provided quite said. Also, who called it into question? Which source exactly from the ones given on that page? You need to specify that and/or go into more detail (i.e. through examples from various reviewers on those reliable sites who reviewed the game).

Coverage issues
  • The Gameplay section needs to be expanded a bit more. It seems to only skim over new features in Dragon Quest VIII. It needs to include basic Gameplay elements, as well (i.e. the basic RPG elements, turn-based system, EXP/gold system, etc.). Imagine someone without a huge knowledge of RPG video games, let alone Dragon Quest VIII is trying to read the article. Try and make people like them understand how the gameplay goes.
  • If there are other stuff that can be explained anymore in detail as far as Plot is concerned, try and explain a bit more. Just make sure that it's verifiable and that you don't make any inferences yourself that the game or the sources don't make.
Image issues
  • The caption behind File:Dq8landscape.jpg needs to be a bit more descriptive than it currently is. How about something like "The Hero in the introduction of the game" or something like that? To me, "taking in the scenery" doesn't sound very professional style-wise.
Other things to watch out for
  • Watch the descriptive words like "wicked" and "sinister". Overly-descriptive adjectives like those likely run afoul of the writing about fiction guideline. I removed these for you.
  • Watch weasel words that overdescribe/editorialize (similar to the previous bullet-point) such as "near-perfect" and "impressive". Usage of such words in this manner detracts from the neutrality of the article.
  • Make sure you're consistent with wording. For example, you start with "scepter" and then later the article says "sceptre" (the latter I corrected). In the future, stick with one spelling throughout the article.
  • Remember that titles of video games are almost always italicized. There were a couple of instances where "Dragon Quest" wasn't italicized, which I corrected.
  • Unless the quotation is a sentence itself, the end-quotation goes before the end-punctuation. I've made the appropriate corrections here.
  • Try and keep non-free images as small as possible (rule of thumb for thumbnails of non-free images is 300px wide) in order to comply with the non-free content policy. I've went ahead and minimized a couple of the images for you.
Conclusions
  • I'm afraid the article still needs some work in order to get it up to GA, but I'll place the article on hold and see what we can get done in about a week's time as far as improvment is concerned. You can always request another GA review in the future should this not pass.
As an aside, for future reference, you may also want to consider getting a peer review done first in order to iron out the big issues before nominating for GA. At least that's what I have done with the article I've worked on. MuZemike 22:26, 10 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks for your help so far. I went ahead and corrected most of the problems (most of the sentences in question really needed to only be deleted), but I still will need to find a few more reliable references before I've done everything you said. It'll probably take me a few days to get back on here, but I should be able to get them soon.?EVAUNIT神の人間の殺害者 15:35, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
I can't seem to find a good reference for the censorship : /  ?EVAUNIT神の人間の殺害者 17:26, 11 December 2009 (UTC)
Just to let you know that I haven't forgotten about this GAN yet; I just had some other things to take care of in the meanwhile. I'll try to get back to this shortly. MuZemike 20:40, 18 December 2009 (UTC)
Passed. The corrections look good enough, now to pass for GA. –MuZemike 22:24, 22 December 2009 (UTC)
One more thing to look at are the citations (but I'm not going to obviously gig on that). The convention has been to list the website under the "publisher" parameter as opposed to the "work" parameter. You also need to keep the date formatting in the citations consistent. Either have them all spelled out or have them all YYYY-MM-DD format. Nice work on the improvements, though. –MuZemike 22:24, 22 December 2009 (UTC)

the story and the spoils

I was going to simplify the story to a simple plot, but I want to discuss this on why it should have so much spoiling info? The Dragovian part was very spoiling that I had the urge to remove it (even most game guides don't mention the Dragovian Trial). Also in much of the way, it does interfere with Wikipedia:WikiProject Video games/Article guidelines.--F-22 Raptor IV 00:28, 5 February 2009 (UTC)

Read the spoiler policy, plot details which are considered spoilers shouldn't be treated any differently than plot details which are not considered spoilers. -- Gordon Ecker (talk) 08:34, 29 October 2009 (UTC)
