The V.C. was won at Allen's Hill near Poutoko in the province of Taranaki. We call this war the New Zealand Land Wars not the Maori wars. ( From The New Zealand Wars and the pioneering period Vol 1 James Cowan)

The NZ wars were all over the North Island of NZ so I don't think it is correct to call them the Waikato Hau Hau .

Hau hau was a religious movement.

Ensign Down later died of Typhoid Fever in Auckland NZ another man (Antonio Rodrigues de Sardinha) was also involved in this rescue but he was a member of a colonial miltia (Taranaki Mounted Volunteers) and thus not eligible for the medal he was given a rare NZ medal 6 years later.

From an article in a book called Tales of old North Taranaki "Rodrigues spurred his horse forward and placed himself and his mount between the rescuers and the bushline to give them cover as they carried Finn (Timothy Finn)to safety." Poor old Tim died of his wounds subsequently.

Information about DSM from a newspaper article in Christchurch Presss 26/11/1987- regarding my fathers meeting with Dudley's youngest son Sergeant Major Michael Stagpoole (then aged 83) who had copies of the citation at his home. Janine Stagpoole Christchurch NZ
