Merge discussion[edit]

Please see the WikiProject New Hampshire talk page for background on the proposed merge of the Durham CDP article with this article.--Ken Gallager (talk) 13:41, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Police and fire department histories[edit]

The lengthy sections on the police and fire departments are out of balance with the rest of the article. I question their notability for the level of detail that is given. The sections are long enough to be individual articles, where they can be independently reviewed for notability. --Ken Gallager (talk) 14:19, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I thought so too but assumed it was just an innocuous vanity thing by local residents that more or less fell within current wiki policy and there was no discussion and what there was contrary to the tag, that's why I removed it. Lycurgus (talk) 17:34, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Also noting that the tag you replaced also directly contradicts your text above, i.e. if the text is not notable enough for a section in wikipedia how could it possibly merit an article on its own? Lycurgus (talk) 18:39, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I see what you mean now. While I think it might not be notable, I was also aware that someone put a lot of work into these sections, so I didn't want to just undo it. Having split out detailed portions of articles before, I know that once the new articles are created, they get more scrutiny for notability, which is what I was looking for. If there is a procedure to evaluate the notability of just these sections, I'd be fine with that.--Ken Gallager (talk) 18:47, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I live in Durham, and I appreciate the great work our public safety officers do: but I am not sure we need to have their histories detailed in this Wikipedia article. The fire department is somewhat noteable because they are a joint venture between the University and the Town, but that could be disposed of in about half a sentence. The Town of Durham's Police Department is just an average small-town police department: it does its job quietly and competently without making news, which is as things ought to be. It's not even the only police force in town: UNH (like many state universities) has its own police department. I humbly suggest that the author of these two sections consider finding space somewhere for a web site devoted to the forces' history and we can link to that from this article. Actually, it appears that these sections were just cut and pasted from the town website. I'm going to pare them down and add a link to the web site in case someone wants to find all these details.Wkharrisjr (talk) 13:27, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Well done! Thanks for going back to the source. --Ken Gallager (talk) 14:21, 16 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

On the topic of police and fire departments, I completely agree that the lengthy summaries were out of place on the article, I do however wonder if their could be some comments on the town's ambulance service, McGregor Memorial EMS, and whether or not it also deserves a small heading in the town section which may perhaps be created into a longer separate article in a manner similar to the police and fire departments? any comments Dac28 (talk) 15:22, 31 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]
