Talk:Dylan Haskins

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Article was initially created by the subject, and since then all content-edits (non-cleanup) have been by IP users (or single-edit users). WP:N is questionable as a lot of the internal wikilinks also seem to lead to similarly suspect articles, notably Roll Up Your Sleeves and Hideaway House... 109.77.115.225 (talk) 03:17, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Serious notability issues with this article. This person is barely known in Dublin city yet has one of the most comprehensive wikipedia pages. Its not surprising when he has just launched a media campaign for his entry into the general election. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.147.133.253 (talk) 19:36, 31 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Notability, and autobiographical issues[edit]

While the article was apparently created by its subject, it appears to be entirely neutral, and its content supported by extensive citation to diverse secondary sources. The article does not portray the subject in a positive light, discuss any actions which are not already part of the discourse, nor make reference to anything which could be construed as self-promotion (save by some fairly extensive mental gymnastics). If there are areas which are felt to be non-NPOV, then they ought to be highlighted here, and discussed. To that end, I've already requested a quality review.

Furthermore, I don't see notability as an issue at all, considering the fact that the subject is in the public eye, has been written about by the country's largest Newspaper (here), has been interviewed on national radio (see here), and spoken at public events (see here). A single internal Wikilink to a subject-created article is not grounds for a notability challenge. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Urschrei (talkcontribs) 18:57, 30 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry Urschrei, but lines such as "the empowerment of individuals and communities, encouraging the employment of alternative approaches when faced with bureaucratic or societal obstacles" seem pretty hard to defend as "entirely neutral" content that "does not portray the subject in a positive light" and that "could [not] be construed as self-promotion". In fact, I'm pretty sure significantly more mental gymnastics would be required to ignore the blatantly subjective nature of the article.
Given your own contributions (particularly the most recently created section at the bottom), are you per chance the subject's PRO?
You say you've requested a quality review of the article - by whom? Do you have a link to said request? 109.78.249.102 (talk) 02:18, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry but I disagree on your grounds for notability. Mentioned in the paper, interviewed on a music show and spoken at a few event is still not notable. Where are Damien Mulley and Darragh Doyle's articles then? This article has gone under the radar because very few people had heard of him before he decided to run for the Dáil. I am tagging this for Notability. Lochaber (talk) 16:15, 1 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

He is both a former television presenter, and a candidate in the national elections for which he is receiving a relatively large amount of attention. Some a few lines in the article probably do portray him in an overly positive light, but that can be easily fixed and while this is almost certainly written by him or a member of his campaign team it is for the most part objective and its well referenced. Also given that wikipedia has pages for most of the candidates in this constituency it makes sense from a politically neutral point of view to have on on Hakins, and given the nature of his campaign he is somebody who is likely to have is profile increase hugely in the coming weeks. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 134.226.252.160 (talk) 02:25, 2 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'd agree. The individual clearly meets notability criterea but the article needs the be cleaned up and reworded to more neutral language. Also sources need to be reliable.

Ok. I think there's an issue here about the definition of notability in Wikipedia. I can see from the edit history that many of the editors of this article do not seem to be regular Wikipedia contributors. Take a good read of WP:NOT and particularly the Who's who - "Even when an event is notable, individuals involved in it may not be." Have a look at WP:POLITICIAN and WP:ENTERTAINER. May possibly garner attention is not a reason for a wikipedia article. Co-presenting a niche programming strand on the small TV station (in the grand scheme of world history - remember, this is Wikipedia) and contributing to a niche radio show does not count as "enduring notability". Assistant Director on a Fringe festival show - not notable.

Regarding other candidates who do have Wikipedia pages - those candidates are currently or have been in the past elected to office. Kevin Humpherys (Lab), Ruadhán Mac Aodháin (SF) and Annette Mooney (ULA) do not. The Paul Sommerville article is also currently under dispute and is proposed for deletion. I am tagging this Notability again (after it was removed by an anonymous IP) and unless you can demonstrate why Dylan Haskins qualifies under any of the Wikipedia guidelines I have cited then I will propose merge to Irish general election, 2011, Dublin South East or another suitable article. I'm sorry and I wish Dylan Haskins and his supporters all the best but there should not be an article about him on Wikipedia - Lochaber (talk) 10:59, 3 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed, not sufficiently notable. Candidate for deletion 213.41.17.166 (talk)

"Assistant Director on a Fringe festival show - not notable." Agreed. Particurlarly since the author didn't think it relevant to write an article on the director or author of the show. 89.126.56.62 (talk) 02:06, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

So is there going to be a delete decision? Surely this qualifies as "let it rain". 213.155.151.233 (talk) 12:49, 16 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Candidate for a lot of editing and pruning perhaps, but not deletion - he is a candidate in a major election. That other candidates and office-holders do not have articles is a matter for improvement of Wikipedia, not a justification for deletion of this article. The Reference number 24 is incorrect. I have updated the Link here: http://www.usenet-vergleichen.de/minidoku-roll-up-your-sleeves-the-diy-counterculture/ can you edit that for me please? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 217.238.51.249 (talk) 19:04, 24 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

This candidate recieved just over 1000 votes and did not take a seat, hardly notable. A large collection of minor achievements don't add up to notability. I have a 100-metre swimming badge myself. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.196.71.178 (talk) 11:53, 28 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

election loss[edit]

This 'notable' election candidate received just 1,141 votes.
