January 2024 Proposed Changes[edit]

I work for ESAB and have familiarized myself with the conflict of interest policy. Thanks for looking this over. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiki-Free-Pie (talkcontribs) 19:25, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]

1. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the first sentence in the Lead paragraph, which reads: ESAB, Elektriska Svetsnings-Aktiebolaget (English: Electric Welding Limited company), is an American-Swedish industrial company.[1]

Suggested Replacement:

ESAB, Elektriska Svetsnings-Aktiebolaget[2] (English: Electric Welding Limited company), is an American-Swedish industrial technology company[3] that is publicly traded on the NYSE.[4]

Why it should be changed: The existing sentence lacks reliable sources and is factually inaccurate. I’ve specified it’s an industrial technology company since it creates the technology that others use for industrial purposes.

2. What I think should be changed:

Please remove the second paragraph in the Lead section:

The ultimate parent company of ESAB is ESAB Corporation, a New York Stock Exchange listed (Ticker: ESAB) with its principal executive office in North Bethesda, Maryland, U.S.[5]

Why it should be changed: The sentence is now redundant once the first suggested change above is put into place. The location of the headquarters is already in the infobox so repeating it in the lead is redundant.

3. What I think should be changed: Please replace the third sentence in the Lead section:

ESAB creates fabrication technology, including for welding, cutting, gas control, PPE, software, and robotic equipment and a separate gas control portfolio focused on healthcare, industrial, and specialty gas control solutions.[6]

Suggested Replacement:

The company manufactures welding, cutting, and gas control equipment [7] for industries including transportation, shipbuilding, and aerospace.[8]

Why it should be changed:

The existing sentence is based on a single, unreliable source (a press release). The replacement I’ve suggested summarizes the company using reliable sources.

4. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the first paragraph in the History section:

The company was founded in 1904 by Swedish businessman Oscar Kjellberg in Gothenburg, Sweden. The company sells equipment used in welding and cutting.

Suggested Replacement:

ESAB was founded in 1904 in Gothenburg, Sweden by Oscar Kjellberg, an inventor and engineer.[2] Kjellberg started ESAB after patenting stick welding , using the invention as the basis for the company. [2] The invention was the first technology that allowed for efficient on-site welding,[9] [8] and Kjellberg licensed ESAB technology to other companies around the world.[2] In the 1980’s, following a decline in the welding industry due to falling demand for commercial steel, ESAB began acquiring competitors and consolidating companies, completing fifteen acquisitions between 1980 and 1987.[10]

Why it should be changed:

The existing paragraph is unsourced. The replacement I’ve suggested offers a more comprehensive description of the company’s history from its origins up through the 1980s and is based on reliable sources.

5. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the third sentence in the History section:

The ESAB was acquired by Charter International in 1994.

Suggested Replacement: In 1994 the ESAB group was acquired by Charter International,[11] an international engineering group based in London.[12]

Why it should be changed: The existing sentence is unsourced and leaves out information about what Charter International is that provides context about the acquisition. The suggestion provides that information and context and is based on reliable sources.

6. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the fourth sentence in the History section:

The ESAB group was acquired by Colfax Corporation on 13 January 2012.

Suggested Replacement:

In 2012, the ESAB brand was acquired by Maryland-based Colfax Corporation when the latter purchased Charter International.[3]

Why it should be changed:

The existing sentence is unsourced. The replacement I’ve suggested is based on a reliable source and adds additional context about the acquisition of the ESAB brand by Colfax.

7. What I think should be changed:

Please replace the seventh paragraph in the History section:

ESAB became a publicly traded, independent company under ESAB Corporation on April 5, 2022 following the spin-off from Colfax.[5] Shyam Kambeyanda was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of the new corporation. [5]

Suggested Replacement:

In March 2021, ESAB split off from Colfax into an independent company; Shyam Kambeyanda remained with ESAB as its CEO.[7] On April 5, 2022, ESAB began trading as an independent, publicly traded company under the stock symbol “ESAB” on the New York Stock Exchange.[13]

Why it should be changed:

The existing sentence is based on an unreliable source (a press release issued by the company). The replacement I’ve suggested offers information covered in reliable press sources about a major development in the company’s modern history.

8. What I think should be changed:

Please add a paragraph after the seventh paragraph of the History section:

In 2018, ESAB acquired Gas Control Equipment (GCE), an equipment company headquartered in Malmö, Sweden.[14]

Why it should be changed:

The acquisition was covered in a prominent industry source that reported on a major development in the company’s history.

9. What I think should be changed:

Please replace what should now be the eighth paragraph in the History section:

On October 17, 2022, ESAB Corporation announced the acquisition of Ohio Medical, a global leader in oxygen regulators and central gas systems for the healthcare industry.[15]

Suggested Replacement:

In October 2022, ESAB Corporation acquired Ohio Medical, which manufactures oxygen regulators and central gas systems for the healthcare industry.[15]

Why it should be changed:

I removed language that does not read as neutral (i.e., “global leader”).

Thanks for taking the time to look over these proposals.Wiki-Free-Pie (talk) 19:03, 25 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
