ping and traceroute[edit]

Like for DAYTIME, I'm removing the paragraph which went

While still available on most UNIX-like operating systems, testing and measurement is now performed with the Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP), using the applications ping and traceroute.

I'd like to know the source of that statement. Ping and traceroute are for IP connectivity tests (ping also for fragmentation/reassembly and maybe TOS). Echo is primarily for TCP testing. There is no way you can use ping to find out if some NAT device messes up your MSS, or what the stable state is of a TCP connection is between hosts A and B assuming very fast client and server. (Probably Echo is not the ideal protocol for that either, but that's beside the point.) JöG (talk) 08:47, 29 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
