Mortuary and mortician[edit]

I'm still trying to track down something more solid than the Bagley citation for this. The OED is very late on citing for the modern sense of "mortuary": their first citation clearly using this sense is from 1935, but Butterworth & Sons were definitely using the term in the early 20th century. For "mortician" they give "1895 Embalmers' Monthly Feb. 170/1 In the January..Embalmers' Monthly the wish was expressed that a word might be coined that would take the place of ‘funeral director’ and ‘undertaker’... We have given the subject considerable thought and..present the word ‘mortician’." Unfortunately, they do not name the writer; if I can dig up the publication (so to speak) I hope to be able to show that it is Butterworth. - Jmabel | Talk 08:07, 1 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
