Considering that editors of artìcles on education should have a better than average command of English, logic, and organizational skills, it's quite shocking that we have the two articles educational assessment and educational evaluation on the same subject although it is crucial to education. Even more shocking is that editors of these articles ignore both the other article and the controversy behind these two terms. One of these articles doesn't even mention the other article, but the other one's editing is even worse because it mentions and refers to the other article but makes no attempt to make a distinction or to describe the controversy. Even more surprising is that only one of these articles has been in Category:Educational assessment and evaluation for more than 13 years.

The situation is in fact even sillier and more shocking, and not only because the confusion was discussed but not resolved already 13 years ago on that category's intro and its talk page: As can be seen also by some comments on the talk pages of these articles, some editors of these pages want to pretend that there is no controversy and that people who claim that these terms are in fact synonyms (despite being used for different concepts by some educators) don't know what they're talking about. The worst thing, and a clear violation of WP's main principles, is that apparently these editors have even removed discussion of the use of the two terms in education, as can be seen by reference to the following quote on the category's discussion page, which is no longer in either article: "In the field of evaluation, there is some degree of disagreement in the distinctions often made between the terms 'evaluation' and 'assessment.'

Similarly surprising chaos exists on WP in the form of parallel articles on subtopics such as the synonyms formative assessment and assessment for learning and in the form of no one having bothered to create an article on or even a redirect page for assessment of learning. There is no doubt lots of other chaos on these and other articles on education, only some of which has been caused by an apparently high percentage of non-native speakers writing on these topics and erroneously thinking they are capable of writing comprehensible English because they have been exposed to a lot of English due to their work and studies, e.g. There are two function considering to the evaluation purpose Formative Evaluations provide the information on the improving a product or a process Summative Evaluations provide information of short-term effectiveness or long-term impact to deciding the adoption of a product or process.

Oppose merge. There are distinct topics here; the only thing that seems to confuse this is the lede of Educational assessment; I don't think that Espoo's addition to the lede with this edit was helpful, in that it created a misleading equivalence between the two concepts, and also added discussion on page contents (which should be on the talk page) to the article itself. I suggest that the lede of Educational assessment be changed to reflect the content of the article. Educational assessment is about the nature and use of testing, including a discussion of the educational philosophy underlying various assessment methods; Educational evaluation is about the evaluation (or testing) of educational techniques, which is something quite different. +1 to @Klbrain:'s Oppose merge. In addition to the distinctions they have pointed out, it seems that "Educational Evaluation" is generally understood to refer not just to student performance but to "educational programs, educational institutions, educational personnel and student assessment". "Educational Assessment", in contrast, seems to be scoped more tightly, to be specifically about student performance, not program effectiveness or institutional assessment . If this is correct, there is a lot of cleanup and clarification to be done on these two articles, but they should not be merged. Carhutt (talk) 20:36, 3 September 2020 (UTC)
