DOB[edit]

When was he born? Is he still alive?

The DOB is in the article (MON DD, 1917). Yes, he is alive. He comes into his office nearly every day (I am a graduate student in the Green Building, where he works. Nationalparks 06:19, 5 December 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Ed Lorentz kept on attending MIT (level 17 Green Bldg) once or twice per week. He employed post-doc students as well. (He was really fit for his age and bush walked, and once had to help me back to my car after cramps set in, in Vermont 1995.) The class of problem that butterflies can influence (I dislike "butterfly effect") are initial value hyperbolic problems. Given a tiny difference in two sets of initial boundary values, the difference between solutions grows at an exponential rate. It put an end to Laplace's notion of the Grand Intelligence. Only Newtons laws of motion were needed, and could be just as chaotic as Quantum mechanics. Mathematicians never bothered with this class of problem as they considered it intractable, nor to this day is there any way of solving them reliably. Lorentz himself did not really see the consequences of his paper until mathematicians working in chaos theory read it. That took a while since they don't normally read atmospheric journals. Poincare's recurrence relation is an early version of strange attractors, and had gone not received much attention until the advent of chaos theory.27.33.81.127 (talk) 02:06, 1 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

his work unique? differential equations say same thing and that is not new — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.174.191.14 (talk) 18:29, 14 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

ReOrg[edit]

Reorganized this page, but not to exclude or verify the previous data, or include new data. Removed date (but not year) of birth for privacy. Included some internal links. Removed Cleanup and Wikify tags. --Gouveia2 19:30, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Research[edit]

I would like to add more on the significance of his work but remain unsure if it would be best added to his bio page or that for the Lorenz attractor. Maybe I'll work both with more technical info on the other page. The thing is, its not too technical but still might enhance the attractor page. Just thought I'd say. Don't bother adding more. Some tosser is deleting anything you try to add. He's the one claiming Lorentz was a Christian. I knew Lorentz for 2yrs and never once did he mention any sort belief. I understand his parents were of Jewish descent.27.33.81.78 (talk) 01:18, 8 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
