Second Russian World Champion in luge?[edit]

She is not the second Russian to become the World Champion but the first. Vera Zozulya, the 1978 World Luge Champion, is a Latvian athlete who represented the Soviet Union. --Pedeshtrian (talk) 22:19, 18 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zozulya was a Soviet, hence Russian luger. Russia is the successor state of the Soviet Union. Also "Zozulya" is not really a Latvian name...--User:Tomcat7 (talk) 05:22, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Her real name is actually Vera Zozuļa with that signature "Ļ" in the Latvian alphabet, so Zozuļa is a real Latvian Name. You can not consider somebody who respresented Soviet Union as Russian saying that "Russia is the successor state of the Soviet Union". Zozuļa is Latvian, just like Mikhail Tal (real name Mihails Tāls, if it is a big deal for you). --Pedeshtrian (talk) 10:19, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"Russian" in this case does not refer to the ethnicity, but to the citizenship. So Zozulya was both a Soviet (hence Russian) and Latvian luger.--User:Tomcat7 (talk) 14:51, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
OK then. If you said that way earlier I would not make such a fuss about it. Ironic statements like "Zozulya is not really a Latvian name." does not help the understanding.--Pedeshtrian (talk) 15:31, 19 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
