The following uncited original research was removed from its random placement in the main article's References section and placed on this Talk page this date. It must be properly cited before being appropriately integrated back into the article:

Old Bet, also known as Betty, died in 1816, not 1827. She was shot by a farmer while on tour in Alfred Maine. There is a plaque at the site of the shooting. The farmer was acquitted of charges. Old Bet is believed now to have been an Indian, not African elephant. Sources for this information are files in Somers Historical Society.
