A question of power— Critiques?[edit]

There is a efficiency problem with beamed power. This isn't a problem with small elevator throughput. But for serious throughput, in the range of what would be needed for a power satellite construction project, it is.

Power satellites need in the range of a million tonnes per year, in rough numbers 100t/hr. A kg takes close to 15 kWh to lift it to GEO.

A mechanical (moving cable) elevator lifting a kg/hr would take 15kW to drive it. An elevator lifting 1 t/hr would take 15 MW. 100 t/hr would need 1.5 GW.

At ten percent efficient, the laser input power would be 15 GW.

8 GW input seems to be enough to support a 100 t/hr laser ablation propulsion transport system.
