Thomas Telford[edit]

What about a reference to Thomas Telford (who I think lived in town?)--Charlesknight 19:09, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Is there any reference to a document showing that Telford lived in the town? He did live in Shrewsbury at the time he was contracted to work on the canal. Telford was the general manager of the canal building but William Jessop was the chief engineer. Charles De Gaulle[edit]

I know that many works make reference to General De Gaulle's family living in Ellesmere during the Second World War? Can anyone supply further details - my understanding is that the family actually lived in Criftins (just outside Ellsmere). Anyone have any dates? Locations? Charles Knight 12:08, 13 July 2005 (UTC)

De Gaulle moved his family out of London in August 1940 to Gadlas Hall in Dudleston Heath/Criftins, a short distance outside Ellesmere, and visited them when he could. It is now a home for the elderly.

Ellesmere Radio?[edit]

There is a link to ellesmere Radio that does not seem to go anywhere? Shall I take a walk up hillcrest next time I'm in Ellesmere and ask? :)

It now seems to go somewhere - the site seems to fall foul of Wikipedia's rules on external links so I have removed it - sorry fellas. (and I listen to one of the broadcasts - good stuff but makes sure the BPI don't catch you!)

Meres and Lakes[edit]

Is it really common usage that a mere is fed primarily by springs beneath its surface, rather than by streams that enter it? Wikipedia's own entry for 'Mere' does not bear this out. Also, is it verified that north Shropshire's meres are primarily fed by underwater springs? They are located simply where a lump of ice persisted at the end of the last ice age, and it would be a remarkable coincidence if these were the same sites as spring sources. I'm removing this for now; please discuss here if unhappy - AG, Stockport, UK.

Francis Egerton, Earl of Ellesmere[edit]

Re his peerage. In Notable People section I have deleted the "& 1st Duke of Ellesmere" (title never existed, and his uncle's Dukedom of Bridgewater became extinct and did not pass to himself). In the general history, his Earldom and Viscountcy of Brackley were created concurrently - see his wiki article, main source DNB - not the Viscountcy after the Earldom. The Viscountcy would have been subsumed by the Earldom and borne as 'courtesy title' by any eldest son in the father's lifetime.Cloptonson (talk) 22:40, 21 March 2012 (UTC) I have rephrased the titles, correcting from "later" to "and" with regard to Viscountcy.Cloptonson (talk) 20:45, 7 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Economy[edit]

I was going to delete the line that states that the Microsoft HQ is a big employer in the town, but I cannot find any evidence or source to back that up. Oliver Ingham - alleged birthplace questioned[edit]

I question the allegation (section History), against which I raised citation need, that the mediaeval warrior was born in Ellesmere. No birthplace is indicated in his wiki article and he was of a Norfolk family where his family's seat appears to have been. Sourced proof please. .Cloptonson (talk) 07:18, 11 January 2024 (UTC)[reply]
