internet slang[edit]

I don't believe this is the correct categorization for this term. This term was used before the internet. It started after email became popular on VAX/VMS systems, IBM mainframes, etc... in the 1980's. It is more appropriately called a common abbreviation or three letter acronym. When I see inclusions such as this on Wikipedia I wonder whether this is an encyclopedia or an encyclopedia plus dictionary. I can't imagine that guidelines haven't been established to ensure consistency ... don't know if this inclusion meets those guidelines though.
