List of Stadia[edit]

I can see no source for the claims that the bids of the cities who have registered an interest are dependent on these stadia, and in some cases (Bristol, Nottingham) they plainly are not based on the stadia named. Where is the reliable source in which it is stated that these stadia are being put forward? Kevin McE (talk) 16:23, 14 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No-one seems to have such evidence, so no of stadia in each city column deleted (and arguably the whole table should be). Kevin McE (talk) 09:10, 8 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I think having a list of potential stadiums is quite useful, but it's not quite clear at the moment if that is what this is? Have any of these stadiums been confirmed? If not I would change the label to reflect the fact that it is just a potential list. 82.46.49.45 (talk) 16:40, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've taken a hands-off approach to this article, after fighting hard to exorcise what I would term "the English dream list" from the main article on the bidding process, since it has little bearing on reality. The list of cities should certainly be kept, but if anyone wanted to remove the table from this article, replacing it with a bulleted list of cities, they would be acting perfectly within the rules of Wikipedia, and would have my blessing. Potential lists have no place in an encyclopedia, and we can add grounds after a more formal plan is released by the bid committee.-- Patrick {oѺ} 17:51, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I've given a brief reference to the stadia in an expanded list of the applicant towns/cities, and deleted the stadia table (too much detail when there is no confirmation that they will be part of a bid) Kevin McE (talk) 21:20, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like a nice compromise. Well done.-- Patrick {oѺ} 21:47, 29 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hooliganism[edit]

I've removed this from the main 2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup bids page today:

On the 25th of August 2009, West Ham United Football fans clashed with Millwall F.C. supporters in a League Cup game. Riot police were also confronted. The incident resulted in one stabbing incident and both set of fans were cited for racially abusing football players from the opposing team by making derisive monkey chants. Observers feel the the incident marred England's bid and suggested that hooliganism remains a problem in English football.[1][2]

You can decide whether or not to include it here. Neither article seems to mention any effect on the World Cup bid.-- Patrick {oѺ} 16:56, 30 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Birmingham Stadia or Stadium?[edit]

According to the BBC only London, Sheffield, Manchester and Liverpool have submitted bids including more than one host stadium. Is it safe to officially remove the mythical City of Birmingham Stadium from the running? --Villafancd (talk) 00:53, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Inclusion of full list of Host City bids[edit]

Within sections of the Austrian and USA Wiki pages for their World Cup bids, there are mentions of stadia that didn't make the final list for that countries 2018/2022 bid. Does anyone wish to give me a reason why I should not go ahead and do the same for England's bid? IanCleverly (talk) 02:31, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Well for the US bid there was a series of lists published by the bid committee, and then some cities opted out, and others were cut. I think the English bid worked differently, and I don't recall the same kind of shortlisting. Did you mean to list all the other stadia in the selected cities? My only concern is that information be citable as being from an official source. Past lists of English stadia have become sprawling and were just original research.-- Patrick {oѺ} 03:01, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

With the English bid, Portsmouth, Hull, Derby and Leicester were also aiming to host World Cup matches, and I was just wondering whether it would be worth just adding (underneath the venues section) that these cities would've been used in the bid until they were removed from the final set of stadia in December 2009 IanCleverly (talk) 11:45, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Page should be moved[edit]

Hi, I understand England has retired their bid for the 2022 World Cup after the United States did the same with their 2018 bid, therefore they will only be competing for the 2018 world cup; this page should be moved to English 2018 FIFA World Cup Bid --189.216.206.123 (talk) 17:26, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

So the English 2022 FIFA World Cup bid never existed? -- [[ axg ◉ talk ]] 17:51, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Disagree entirely with move proposal: by that logic the article will have to be deleted if England don't win the right to the 2018 games. The fact that England applied for the 2022 games is an encyclopaedic fact, and if it was ever notable enough for inclusion, it remains. Notability is not temporary. (And England did not retire their 2022 bid, it was invalidated by the inevitability of a UEFA member winning the 2018 rights) Kevin McE (talk) 17:58, 18 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]
User:DitzyNizzy, with a total disregard and lack of respect for the discussion that had started here, made the move, claiming justification from undiscussed page moves elsewhere. Given that the move had already been reverted, there were no grounds for assumption that the move was uncontroversial. I have challenged him/her to do the decent thing: undo his move and then join discussion.
She/he makes the valid point that all bids which have "shrunk" from being two event bids to one-chance-only tenders should be treated similarly: is the preference that centralised discussion take place at Talk:2018 and 2022 FIFA World Cup bids or at WT:FOOTY? Corruption[edit]

Newsweek has uncovered evidence in alleged bribe scandal regarding votes for 2022 and 2018 world cup, Newsweek has reported that it has highly placed source who confirmed that World Cup votes were rigged so as to make that there was a a fair play in voting process when Qatar and Russia won the their subsequent votes, but the truth is quite the opposite, Newsweek alleges that for instance Qatar has bribed 10 Fifa officials = with 10 million US dollar bribe each, Newsweek has also stated that it'll be publishing whole story in due course, Sepp Blatter is among Fifa officials that have been bribed, if allegations prove to be true, Septic Bladder and all other fifa officials involved in vote bribe scandal could face criminal charges and long spell in prison if found guilty. http://offthebench.nbcsports.com/2010/12/14/jonathan-alter-qatar-may-have-paid-10-mil-for-each-fifa-vote/ —Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.220.53.72 (talk) 04:05, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
