To "mount" or not?[edit]

My father-in-law (a Donegal native) is quite adamant that there no "Mount" preceding the name and that it is simply "Errigal". Any comments? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Noonand (talk • contribs) 10:05, 17 November 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Moving the article from Mount Errigal to Errigal sounds good to me. If we do, it might be worth including a sentence to say that the variant "Mount Errigal" exists but is not used by locals (or officially?). Q·L·1968 ☿ 20:24, 30 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a section to the page -- Errigal or Mount Errigal? -- explaining that the name is not Mount Errigal. This is particularly necessary, given that the title of this page is incorrect. Padraig1968 (talk) 16:04, 22 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Padraig1968, I personally agree that this article should be moved to simply Errigal. However, this Talk page may not be on many watchlists. Therefore, I suggest you ask the question at WikiProject Ireland, just to ensure a broader consensus. If agreed, the move itself would be easily done. Thank Declangi. I'm new to editing wiki pages. I tried to place a request on WikiProjectIreland but the advice seemed to be to place a move request at the bottom of the page. I've now done that. Mount Errigal → Errigal – I propose that this page be renamed Errigal. The mountain is officially called An Earagail or Errigal or Errigal Mountain, but NOT Mount Errigal.^[1] Mount Errigal is the name of a hotel in Letterkenny, built in 1984 -- The Mount Errigal Hotel. The hotel created the false impression that there must be a mountain called Mount Errigal -- and that name has gradually spread - including to this website. In 2016, Ireland's national tourism authority, Fáilte Ireland, apologised for using the name "Mount Errigal" in its brochure, rather than the proper name of the mountain.^[2] Locals refer to the mountain as Errigal or An Earagail and find the unofficial name change rather annoying.^[3] Imagine, if you will, that other mountains in Ireland were similarly changed, e.g. Mount Lugnaquilla, Mount Carrauntoohil or Mount Galtymore Padraig1968 (talk) 09:14, 24 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

In a perhaps related point, it is fine to notify WikiProjects of discussions, but for Padraig1968 to say in the notification at WT:IE that the current page title is erroneous runs afoul of WP:CANVASS. Dekimasuよ! 19:38, 28 February 2019 (UTC).[reply]

Support a move to Errigal. Ordnance Survey Ireland maps show the mountain as "Errigal" in the first edition and later "Errigal Mountain" but not "Mount Errigal" (see coords 55.033, -8.112 in Geohive mapviewer). Removed Hill walking section[edit]

I removed this section as it looked like a copyright violation of this archived webpage. From what I can tell, the text was added with this edit in 2011. Interestingly, the same text occurs in this press release from Donegal County Council (10th paragraph, Charles Sweeney quote) dating from July 2015. Declangi (talk) 00:07, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
