History of the symbol?[edit]

A history section, mentioning when the symbol was designed and adopted would be a useful addition to this article. nandhp (talk) 16:40, 29 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It would need to start out by making the point that the e does not stand for 'estimated' . This is European legislation and in only 3 or 4 of the official languages does the word for 'estimated' start with an e. The oldest legislation refers to it as the 'European' approval symbol and it acts as a metrological passport such that goods bearing it need not undergo further checks when crossing EU state boundaries. I.e. it stands for the e in european.

Estimated is also the wrong term as it implies an element of guesswork rather than the degree of calculation involved in getting a given batch of goods to comply

What is a 'prepackage'?[edit]

I checked a couple of online dictionaries, they define 'prepackage' as a transitive verb, but this article uses it as if it were a noun. I suspect it's jargon, so should be defined here, hyperlinked, or if possible replaced with common terminology. Blog article from a US packaging designer on the Estimated symbol[edit]

Usage information/examples? A picture of usage would be nice[edit]

"Appended to the nominal mass or volume" in the first sentence is too vague to explain how the symbol is actually used in practice. For example, does it go before or after the units? Separated by a space, a comma, nothing? Without consulting external sources, I could easily imagine the following usages:

5 kg, e
5 kg e
5 kge
5 kg (e)
5e kg
5 e kg
5, e, kg
5(e) kg
5 kg ±0.1e
...

but presumably at most one or two of these are correct?

Also, a picture of this symbol being used for some packaging would be helpful.

On the two items on my desk it's written 175ml ℮ and

400g
℮

Having a mark means there's no mark[edit]

The article reads, in part:

The e-mark indicates that [ . . . ]no package having a negative error greater than twice the tolerable negative error may bear the estimated sign.

So seeing the mark means, in some cases, that you don't see the mark? Or displaying the mark means that you're not displaying the mark? It makes my head hurt.

I think that last bullet point (in the list of things that the e-mark indicates) should be:

the package does not have a negative error greater than twice the tolerable negative error.

Is that right? The current version, at any rate, can't be.TypoBoy (talk) 20:42, 17 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed replacement for the opening image box[edit]

There is not a lot of difference between the two .svg images that begin this article, I really don't understand why we have them. So I propose to replace the first one using template:infobox symbol as shown right, which captures the essential technical information. The style is very similar to that used by {{Infobox currency sign}} – for example at Euro sign. It encapsulates the essential information about the sign (and means that the unicode code point can come out of the first sentence). E (Ecco2k album)[edit]

E (Ecco2k album) has been added several times and removed, rightly so, because, while the estimated sign is prominently on the cover, it lack a citation establishing cultural significance per WP:CULTURALREFS. However I found this article that does mention the sign on the cover and its significance. Perhaps one mention in one article is not enough, but I am submitting it here for consideration.
