Fair use rationale for Image:Evelynchampagne.jpg[edit]

Image:Evelynchampagne.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If there is other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on the other images used on this page. Note that any fair use images lacking such an explanation can be deleted one week after being tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you.

Birth date[edit]

There appears to be a dicothomy of interest regarding King's birth date. The year 1960 seems to be set in stone, but 29 June or 1 July is regularly cited. For example, see All Music Guide and IMDb. From my lengthy experience, these sites are amongst the most reliable. Can anyone provide something more definitive (unlike most pop performers, the differential is clearly not aimed to pretend she is actually younger than she is). Perhaps someone has access to Evelyn herself to settle the issue. Thank you,

"Champagne"[edit]

You would think that of all the things to feature in this article would be where her "Champagne" name comes from? Can someone add that if they know the story? Dollvalley (talk) 11:15, 26 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I have now added this with citations, if anyone as further material please comment / add Dobsonstar (talk) 10:20, 8 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Evelyn King (singer) → ? – Many sources use "Evelyn Champagne King", so should 'Champagne' be re-added? If so, Evelyn Champagne King or Evelyn "Champagne" King if use of quotations is allowed? --Relisted. • Support a move to Evelyn "Champagne" King per WP:NCDAB (use natural disambiguators) and WP:TITLEFORMAT (titles are not enclosed in quotation marks except when the quotation marks are part of a name or title). Although there was a short period in the 1980s when King was not credited as Evelyn "Champagne" King, she has recorded under this name most of the rest of the time. She is listed at AllMusic and at her own website as Evelyn "Champagne" King. Cf. Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown, Robert John "Mutt" Lange, Donald "Duck" Dunn, and, of course, Paul "Wine" Jones). —  AjaxSmack  02:06, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Strong oppose Evelyn "Champagne" King per WP:STAGENAME (avoid (for example) adding a nickname, or a contracted version of the original first name(s) in quotes between first and last name). The examples cited by AjaxSmack should probably be moved as well. I'd be fine with Evelyn Champagne King if sources support that—if Wikipedia had been around at the time, it's conceivable we would've had an article titled John Cougar Mellencamp. Otherwise, there's nothing wrong with the current title. --BDD (talk) 18:00, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
    • Many sources use quote marks. Other sources omit them: [1][2][3][4] George Ho (talk) 19:51, 29 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
      • I fully agree with the point of WP:STAGENAME and the example given (use Bill Clinton, not William "Bill" Clinton) makes the point well because Clinton is not known as William "Bill" Clinton. However, in the case here and the other examples I provided above, the subjects identify themselves and are identified in sources by the complete string including both the real forename and the stage name in quotes. This is the most common name of these subjects and, therefore, should be the title of the article at Wikipedia. In short, WP:STAGENAME doesn't really apply to this case and, anyway, as a guideline is trumped by WP:UCN, a policy.  AjaxSmack  02:09, 30 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Evelyn Champagne King, as George has demonstrated this is a form used in sources without running afoul of STAGENAME. --BDD (talk) 19:41, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support Evelyn "Champagne" King. I'm with Ajax, I don't think this is the kind of thing STAGENAME is warning against, she's much better known as the full string "Evelyn 'Champagne' King", not as Evelyn King or "Champagne". The common name trumps the guidelines; this is a good exception to the general rule of avoiding quote marks in titles.--Cúchullain t/c 16:04, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support per User:Cuchullain. The proposed name does seem to be actually her common name in the literature, this is not just a case of artificially putting a stagename in the middle of a birthname.  — Amakuru (talk) 19:20, 3 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
