Untitled[edit]

Someone please add to this page! Inclusionary zoning is a tome. There needs to be a page on exclusionary zoning to contrast it.

You certainly can't argue that exclusionary zoning isn't the more common of the two! Bike756 (talk) 05:14, 26 December 2008 (UTC)bike756[reply]

Exclusionary zoning planned revisions[edit]

As the country has continued to grow and diversify, exclusionary zoning has gained even more salience as a means of excluding certain segments of the populations from specific communities. Such policies generate vast social consequences for the excluded population. Given the impact of these measures, I feel it is imperative to elucidate all aspects of the issue in order to help educate the general public. As part of a class assignment, I intend to substantially renovate the current page and eventually provide a comprehensive account of this widespread practice.

The current page is clearly in need of significant improvements. At this moment, the entry merely contains a cursory description of the policy, an inadequately brief historical summary and only two vague examples of the practice. Ultimately, I plan to completely revise the current organization structure while also adding substantial amounts of new information. My ultimate layout will encompass:

1) Lead section (expand; will primarily focus on defining the term and briefly explaining relevance)

2) History of exclusionary zoning (edit this section to further elaborate on history)

3) Legal framework (new section added)

3.1 Description
3.2 Case history (shorten list of landmark cases and provide brief description for each)

4) Examples (update with more exhaustive list of applications)

5) Motivations for exclusionary zoning (new section added)

5.1 Property values
5.2 Aesthetics (i.e. maintaining single family may be appealing)
5.3 Neighborhood stress (i.e. greater burden on municipal services, more traffic)

6) Effects of exclusionary zoning (new section added)

6.1 Racial/economic stratification
6.2 Sprawl (i.e. forces low-density development)
6.3 Housing costs
6.4 Education

7) See also (edit by adding more links)

8) References (combined with Bibliography and add additional sources)

9) External Links (new section added)

Thus, this entry will not only sufficiently describe the policy itself, but it will also delve into the measure's extensive effects on disenfranchised populations and on society as a whole. I truly believe that this issue is crucial to many aspects of society's functioning and therefore, given the gravity of the issue, welcome all suggestions and advice for how to better this article. Specifically, I encourage feedback on my proposed organization layout and on any source recommendations. Mwtwgt (talk) 05:45, 4 October 2012 (UTC)[reply]
