I think the FTA folks wrote this

...because the truth of the matter is these boxes are used primarily for piracy, and the company's claims to the contrary are horse shit.

Should this be tagged as non-neutral then? I agree that it isn't neutral and could help with a bit of rewriting but as I understand tagging is considered a bit extreme. WiiNie (talk) 20:34, 4 April 2008 (UTC)

Piracy is discussed at length, as are the various lawsuits. But the legitimate uses and the basic functions are are also covered. The article is balanced.

I'm wondering if the bit about Bell being pirate-laden rubbish needs to be updated a wee bit; there was a card swap a while back.

Not sure if Equity Broadcasting can be relied upon to continue its FTA broadcasts (or anything else) into the new year; the company is currently in Chapter 11 bankruptcy.^[1] Certainly it is not the only broadcaster uplinking FTA content to North American satellite television, but were it to fold, more than thirty individual US local stations could disappear from the dish rather abruptly. Should this warrant a mention?

One more caveat: a year ago, Equity had mentioned MPEG4 in one of their SEC filings as "the conversion to Mpeg-4 compression from the current Mpeg-2 compression will allow the company to put almost twice as many signals in our current satellite bandwidth at approximately the same monthly cost."^[2] I don't think they're anywhere near following through with this (as they have more serious problems atm) but the risk that viewers could have to swap out receivers just to keep existing programming is a real one on many non-broadcast services. --66.102.80.212 (talk) 21:55, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

Both analog and digital possible?

Not much point. There is almost no analogue TV left on satellite, as one channel would occupy an entire transponder under that system - potentially limiting an entire satellite to 24 - 32 analogue channels. --66.102.80.212 (talk) 17:26, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

"Back in the day" I had to investigate using Linux WRT (With Respect To) some sensitive and secure projects WRT licenses. At that time GPL & LGPL were only about a foot high. At least some recivers date from that time. LGPL applied to dynamic linking and required that anything linked to Linux specifically allow reverse engineering. GPL applied to static linking and required that anything linked to Linux include the source code. SOOO I don't think you actually CAN commit piracy if you use Linux based software.
