B-Pillar Absence[edit]

Aren't these the cars that, because they had no B-Pillar due to the odd door design, would lose structural integrity with all the doors open and collapse to the point that they couldn't be closed again until you lifted up the roof? Can anyone verify? --208.41.98.142 17:21, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No the Facel looks like an US car but it has a very strong tubular frame like a Ferrari of the same era. Ericd 14:01, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, door construction of the Excellence differs from Eldorado and Continental as there is no B-pillar at all while the American cars use a "half" B-pillar that ends under the window line. On these cars, door latches are integrated in the "stump" pillar, while Excellence doors lock by latches in the sill. A Similar system was invented in the late 1910 by Swiss Georges Gangloff (with an additional latch, hidden in the door window frame, locking in the roof top), and was in use in France either via it's subsidiary, Carrosserie Gangloff in Colmar, or as a licenced product. Pasadena based coachbuilder Walter Murphy held a licence, too, and managed to improve the rigidity of the lock. All hardtops, especially four doors, need strenghtened frames. And, yes, there were Excellence with doors falling open while driving, giving some headache to Facel engineering.--Chief tin cloud (talk) 11:15, 14 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
