Adjective declension -- examples[edit]

Noun inflection[edit]

The use of Genitive in this article does not apply to the modern language, neither spoken nor written Faroese of 2019. Genitive has been replaced by prepositional phrases, especially “hjá” and “á” in fromt of the Dative case, much like the use of “of” in English, e.g. “the house OF David” which would be “húsið HJÁ Dávid” – so I think it would be more correct to present Genitive as “hjá/á + Dative”, – or if we stick to this article, if you were to say “the hair of a beautiful girl” you would say “hárið á ein(ar)i vakrari gentu” = “á + Dative” in this article. Reconstructed Genitive like “eins góðs barns” look insane in the eyes of us native speakers.

Also words like “tveggja” are obsolete, and in compound words like gentubátur’ (women’s (race) boat) the reconstructed form ‘gentA-bátur’, does not apply either – as the actual form is ‘gentU-bátur’. https://sprotin.fo/dictionaries?_SearchInflections=0&_SearchDescriptions=0&_SearchFor=gentub%C3%A1tur&_DictionaryPage=1&_DictionaryId=2&_Group=

So I’ve added the asterisk (*) and brackets around these obsolete Genitive cases, which I think is the proper way to present them, if they are to be presented at all.
