General comments[edit]

Hello again! I will review this article in the next week though I will already leave some initial comments. The Blue Rider 12:08, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, I'm looking forward to it. – Editør (talk) 12:40, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And as you will see, I've somewhat expanded the lead. – Editør (talk) 17:43, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@The Blue Rider Just a quick reminder. – Editør (talk) 15:44, 18 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This is a rather short article. Would you say there's no more information about the name out there? The Blue Rider 12:58, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The existing sections:
  • Etymology: I don't think I can meaningfully expand this section.
  • Popularity: other countries near the Netherlands don't seem to have a significant number of people named Femke (Denmark: 30 [1], England and Wales: not in top 100 [2], France: <20 [3]), so I don't expect to expand this section with other countries.
  • People named Femke: the list contains all people with an article on the English Wikipedia, but it can be expanded once more articles become available, I'm sure there are some Femkes that are notable.
Additional things:
  • The name Femke is on the list of allowed first names in Hungary [4], but without having found actual statistics, I don't think there is much I could meaningfully say about it
  • I've found one fictional character named Femke that may be worth mentioning, because it is from a book by the classic Dutch author Multatuli; there is even a statue of the title character Woutertje Pieterse and Femke in Amsterdam: commons:Category:Woutertje Pieterse & Femke. But this would be a list of one or a very short paragraph, so I had left it out.
  • There might be a relation between the name and the West Frisian word famke (girl), but I didn't find any reliable sources linking the word explicitly to the name Femke.
This is all information I could find and that I could think of reviewing other given name articles on Wikipedia. – Editør (talk) 18:56, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I will the source check and if everything checks out, I will be passing the article. The Blue Rider 17:36, 25 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Lead[edit]

Etymology[edit]

  • Include a sentence about the meaning of Femke.
It is my understanding that the precise meaning of Fem/Femme is unclear, so would inserting "Femke means 'little Fem':" before "It is a diminutive (...)" do? – Editør (talk) 12:33, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've added "Femke means 'little Fem':" because it seemed like an improvement. – Editør (talk) 12:48, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • All those citations at the end of the section are for each of the alternative names, right?
The first reference explains they're diminutives, the others are for the individual names, where they link the name to Femke (for Feemke) or Femme (other names). I've placed references at the end of a sentence throughout the article. – Editør (talk) 12:33, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Popularity[edit]

  • Academic researchers have investigated the peaks for Femke, but were unable to explain them. The reason for the popularity of Femke was due to the peak of -ke ending given names, now the reason for that is unknown, right? Perhaps a reword to make that clearer.
I've added "what caused", does this make it clearer or does it require a more thorough rewrite? – Editør (talk) 21:40, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, that looks fine. The Blue Rider 12:57, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • a website about given names in Germany determined that Femke. Well, the natural follow-up question is: what makes Deutsche Vornamensstatistics reliable?
The website seems to be transparent about the incompleteness of their data. I haven't used the site's number estimates because I had used precise numbers for the other countries. I have used the region where they said the name occurs because occurrance is also true with incomplete data. Do you think the wording in the article is too strong for being based on the incomplete data? – Editør (talk) 21:40, 19 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Well, if the data is incomplete the state with the highest occurrence might not be correct. So perhaps clarify that it is not known for certain. The Blue Rider 12:57, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
With the phrase "Based on information from over 450 German cities," I already tried to indicate the following statement is based on limited data. I think the phrase implies these are not all German cities, and therefore what follows is not based on complete statistics. Do you (still) think I should make it more explicit? – Editør (talk) 18:09, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
And if you think it should, do you maybe have a suggestion? I've already tried several things, but they all didn't seem to work. – Editør (talk) 19:06, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Image(s)[edit]

  • A source is missing for the map.
The image is attributed on Wikimedia Commons: the map was made by commons:User:YukiKoKo based on data from meertens.knaw.nl. Do you mean a source for the national and municipal boundaries? – Editør (talk) 12:21, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
No, I meant a source for the relative distribution of the name Femke per municipality. The Blue Rider 12:32, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I see, I've added a source reference for the data to the caption. – Editør (talk) 12:38, 8 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Sources[edit]

  • Oh well, almost everything is in Dutch and I don't speak the language, I will check the French, German and English ones.
    Reference #6, #10, #21 and #23, checks out.
