Apart from the Fender Dynamic Vibrato bridge, the rest of it was the same as a Duo-Sonic; simply put, the Mustang was a budget model with a tremolo arm.

Not so. The existing Duo-Sonic and the Musicmaster were both redesigned in 1964, a few months after the release of the Mustang, adopting its body shape. The Mustang itself was an in-between model, especially the 24" scale version; The budget trem model was the Fender Bronco, which also adopted the Mustang shape but had an even cheaper trem arm, with no redeeming features other than rarity AFAIK. Were all Mustang and Mustang Bass variants withdrawn by 1982? Some websites seem to assume they were. Watch this space, or does anyone know? Andrewa 20:42, 4 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Impractical" POV on trem arm[edit]

Hmmmm... current article reads:

Many players also prefer the Duo-Sonic II to the Mustang because it lacks the impractical and difficult to maintain tremolo bridge.

But later (I'm glad to see) the comments about some notable players preferring the tremolo arm above all other designs is still there. I think impractical is rather POV. I'll fix it sometime if nobody else does first. Andrewa 03:34, 5 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Done. Andrewa 14:37, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can we please get every reference to 'tremolo' changed to 'vibrato'?220.240.153.58 (talk) 18:32, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Related models[edit]

So... if this is the Mustang article, why are people talking about the Musicmaster and Duo Sonic? Someone ought to redo this page entirely... anyone opposed to me attempting that? Danglybanger

Fender Musicmaster and Fender Duosonic both already have their own articles, as does the Fender Bronco and the corresponding bass models. IMO it's good to have an overview of the history of these related models somewhere, and as the Mustang is the most famous of them, it makes sense to have this writeup in this article.
But I'm certainly not opposed to your having a go at rewriting the article. Interested to see how you get on. Andrewa 14:37, 25 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

shakira?[edit]

shakira plays mustang? citation?

She has been seen many, many times playing a pink glitter sparkle Mustang. I think typing 'Shakira Mustang' into Google would yield a few results.220.240.153.58 (talk) 18:34, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Kurt Cobain[edit]

i dont know if the linking of kurt cobain to the mustang guitar is pertinent, he played a custom combo of a jaguar guitar and mustang guitar which has been refered to as a "jag-stang"

Yeah, but they didn't make one until 1994. Meaning for 99% of his career it didn't exist. He grew up playing a Mustang, it was his favorite guitar until it was destroyed in a flood Mujarimojo 05:34, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

1. He primarily used modified Fender Mustangs. A single coil pickup in the neck position and humbucker in the bridge position also modified the bridge to a Gibson style Gotoh Bridge.

2. He played Jaguars for Nirvana's Nevermind tour in Europe because it was easier to find/replace cheap left-handed Jaguars than Mustangs before they hit it big.

3. He played the "Jag-stang" only a few times on the in-utero tour as he felt it was unfinished.

4. They made Fender Mustangs in the US from 1964-1982. He played Mustangs mostly from this era and a few of the Japanese reissues.

There is a long history of removing it by many many editors, which would make the removal a consensus. However, if you can add a citation from a website that passes the requirements of WP:RS (the Kurt's equipment site is an amateur fansite and fails that policy) it can easily be added back in. All the guitar model pages are prone to fanboy listcrufting. No new additions on any guitar pages unless their is verification. A simple valid citation and the Wiki-guitarist project members will likely ensure that your valid edit sticks. Hope that helps! Mr Pyles (talk) 03:23, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject class rating[edit]

This article was automatically assessed because at least one WikiProject had rated the article as start, and the rating on other projects was brought up to start class. BetacommandBot 16:36, 9 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Trivia[edit]

Kurt Cobain stated that the Fender Mustang was his favorite guitar, and that he bought his first Mustang for only $20, where as now they can be purchased for hundreds or even thousands of dollars.
That's what is said in his book, but I wonder if it's true. Finding a mustang for 20 dollars, even at the times, is rare. But finding, by coincidence, a left-handed pre-cbs fender mustang sold 20 dollars is very unlikely. user14 20:24 20 February 2008 (UTC)

just finding one is unlikely. but once you found it the seller would have likely been thrilled at getting anything at all for it. these were cheap beginner guitars even in the 80s. pre cbs only meant strats and teles. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 69.125.110.223 (talk) 17:14, 3 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I picked up a Mustang at around the same time for not much more than that, so it wouldn't surprise me. There seemed to be a period of time where every college student had one under their bed that they bought on a whim and never played. 219.90.136.52 (talk) 16:48, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did I just hear 'Weeaboo'?[edit]

Dear Otaku,
Azusa Nakano, no matter how much you wish she was, is not a real person. Please refrain from adding her name to the article.
--Cubern (talk) 04:45, 7 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Who is it that keeps going through articles on intruments that appear in the japanese series 'K-ON!', and attributing the cast of that anime or their namesakes from The Pillows as "notable players of this instrument"? It's bordering on obsessive. 放課後ティータイム are not a real band, and The Pillows shouldn't be considered "notable" just because their conglomerate reused their names in another medium. 219.90.136.52 (talk) 16:45, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

David Byrne[edit]

David never used a Mustang - He used a Duosonic - There's no source, so it's going off. If anyone wants to rebut this, I have pictures - He used a Duosonic, and later modded two with humbuckers.--BuddyOfHolly (talk) 19:38, 29 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Agreed. Other than this wiki page - and all the other web pages that use it as a 'reliable source' - I have never found a shred of evidence that Byrne ever used a Mustang. And I myself am a 20 year fan of Talking Heads and a 15 year player of Mustangs myself. Byrne simply didn't own a Mustang. It was a Duo-Sonic.220.240.153.58 (talk) 18:30, 3 May 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, David Byrne now has a source as a notable Mustang user - a link to a video posted by Fender on their website that shows Byrne playing a... wait for it... DUO-SONIC. David Byrne's guitar was a Duo-Sonic, NOT A MUSTANG! I removed Byrne as a notable Mustang player (given there is still no evidence of him being such), but here is the link that was used as a citation in case anyone wishes to see him playing the Duo-Sonic for themselves.https://www.fender.com/articles/artists/6-iconic-fender-offset-players

Robbmonster (talk) 06:39, 14 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Can we PLEASE get a moratorium on David Byrne being added as a Mustang user until someone provides DEFINITIVE PROOF he actually played one? I just removed him from the 'notable users' list for about the 20th time. A Duo-Sonic - despite the similarities - is NOT a Mustang.Robbmonster (talk) 02:22, 13 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Andy Cox?[edit]

Andy Cox, Fine Young Cannibals, I believe used one too. Maybe somebody knows. Great guitar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Longinus876 (talkcontribs) 14:57, 10 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Move discussion in progress[edit]

There is a move discussion in progress on Talk:Mustang (disambiguation) which affects this page. Please participate on that page and not in this talk page section. Thank you. Dicklyon (talk) 18:35, 16 January 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Can we please attempt to stabilize the "Notable users" Section?[edit]

It seems this particular section changes every single day, which is very annoying, because it means a user can come to this page on monday, and another on friday, and have completely different readings.

I am interested in adding back some of the "old" known users, though I cannot personally endorse all of them. Can we discuss these users in the talk section? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.206.151.149 (talk) 19:18, 30 October 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The display picture...[edit]

... shows a Fender Mustang with an 'aftermarket bridge pickup'. This smacks of someone simply posting a picture of their own baby for all to see. Surely there are CC pictures out there of STOCK Mustangs that could be used.220.240.153.58 (talk) 12:20, 24 April 2016 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 220.240.153.58 (talk) 12:06, 24 April 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Competition Mustang Colors (Burgundy)[edit]

Hi I want to propose a change, in the model section it mentions the 3 competition mustang colors and says red is also known as burgundy but this is incorrect. The blue color was actually called burgundy. Here is a Fender Price List from 1970 that shows what the names for the colors are: https://guitar-compare.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/1970-March-15.pdf — Preceding unsigned comment added by 47.146.169.133 (talk) 10:23, 28 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
