Green Cross? Patriots of Amelia Island?[edit]

What are the Green Cross of Florida and the Patriots of Amelia Island? --Awiseman 22:04, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I put a link to the page explaining what they are. I linked Gregor MacGregor to the Green Cross, since they say he was the organizer. --—The preceding unsigned comment was added by Ebyabe (talkcontribs) .
Sorry, usually good about that. :( --Ebyabe 14:34, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
No problem. I found an article about the Patriots of Amelia Island and added that too. The town sure has a colorful history! --Awiseman 14:57, 16 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

José Martí[edit]

was it from here that the cuban national hero, jose marti, set sail for cuba with 3 ships on december 25, 1894, to start the revolution of 1895 and liberation of cuba from spain? if so, that would be a nice piece of info to add for this community.Sundar1 (talk) 15:00, 12 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The mission[edit]

Perhaps the mission was named after the island, or vice versa. It isn't clear. Also, "relocate" is ambiguous. Perhaps what is meant is (not that the mission's inhabitants refused to leave, remaining in the mission, but) that the island's original inhabitants refused to depart. (And why should they?!) Unfree (talk) 17:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Incidentally, it would scan better if the tenses were consistent. Unfree (talk) 17:16, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The musketeers[edit]

Who were MacGregor's musketeers, and what language did they speak? Unfree (talk) 17:25, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History and historical setting[edit]

I enjoyed reading this article, knowing nothing about Fernandina Beach, but I wonder whether the island's role in American history may have been understated. The discussion of the eight flags is entertaining and informative, but lacks context, that is, how important was all this? How did the population change over time? What were the backgrounds of the inhabitants? Did business prosper, or was the island a backwater, perhaps a refuge for fugitives? Wasn't the construction of missions and forts rather large endeavors? How many people and ships were involved?, I wonder. How expensive were these projects among the those of the Spanish king, American government, etc.? How important was the river, and why? My curiosity could be assuaged, no doubt, by well-chosen links to other articles. Unfree (talk) 17:46, 17 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The history section should be entirely rewritten. There is too much emphasis on just showing Fernandina Beach under the 8 flags but not enough context. The most important aspect of the history section is citation and nothing is cited. I propose to either delete everything or find proper citations and insert them into the sections but add more context.--Excel23 (talk) 22:04, 1 May 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fernandina is not the northernmost city in Florida[edit]

Editor Ebyabe thinks Fernandina is the northernmost city in Florida. It is not. Look at a map and you will see that there are other towns to the west in Florida situated at higher latitudes. De Funiak Springs is an incorporated city, and it is north of Fernandina.

The Jacksonville posse seems to have an agenda of ascribing a Jacksonville provenance to anything noteworthy or historical in the Jacksonville metropolitan area, even in adjacent counties. This gives the lead paragraphs of the articles an unfortunate Chamber of Commerce boosterism tone. --Carlstak (talk) 23:16, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
