Raman scattering[edit]

Raman scattering enables the measurement of temperature along an optical fiber. Commercial systems have been available for at least 10 years. Ephesians 2:10 (talk) 08:35, 16 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

First reference[edit]

First reference is not a pdf but a company site... --193.146.9.153 (talk) 10:04, 20 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. It appears that the paper that was originally referenced is no longer online. I've marked the link as dead.--Srleffler (talk) 05:59, 21 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Requested move 14 August 2019[edit]

The following is a closed discussion of a requested move. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made in a new section on the talk page. Editors desiring to contest the closing decision should consider a move review after discussing it on the closer's talk page. No further edits should be made to this discussion.

The result of the move request was: There's a consensus for hyphenation of the 9 among the 10 pages listed here. There's no consensus to change the spelling variant of Fibre optic gyroscope and also no consensus to move Optical fiber connector. In addition, consensus is unclear in moving Fiber optical thermometer to Fiber-optic thermometer. These issues should better be discussed in separate move requests. – Per WP:HYPHEN and in light of the recent move request that resulted in "optical fiber cable" being moved to fiber-optic cable and showed a clear consensus for the hyphen, I think we should move the rest of these articles to match the main article and other offshoot articles like Fiber-optic communication and Fiber-Optic Link Around the Globe that already use the hyphen. After all, it is more grammatically correct to use the hyphen. There is one article (Fibre optic gyroscope), that spells fiber with an "re". I know we don't generally change alternative spellings in titles unless there is a good reason, but in this case when all of the other articles use one spelling, I think that's a good enough reason to change the spelling on WP:CONSISTENCY grounds. Also, Fiber optical thermometer currently uses "optical" instead of "optic", but when you do a Google search for "Fiber optical thermometer", Google asks "did you mean "Fiber optic thermometer". So clearly Google thinks it should be "optic" and yields almost 5 times the search results for "optic" rather than "optical". Lastly, Optical fiber connector vs "Fiber-optic connector" on Google Ngrams shows clearly that "fiber-optic connector" is the preferred term, with no results for "optical fiber connector". Support moving "fiber optic foo" to fiber-optic foo" and "fibre optic foo" to "fibre-optic foo", but oppose moving optical fiber connector. "Fiber-optic connector" just sounds wrong. Strongly oppose violating WP:ENGVAR. Do not change articles from one national variety of English to another. Consistency between articles is not necessary.--Srleffler (talk) 00:55, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see a page move in the history of Fibre optic gyroscope. It looks like the user who created the article used the British spelling for the article title and the American spelling in the lede. Another user fixed the inconsistency by making the lede match the article title. I think that complies with WP:ENGVAR. I agree that "fiber-optic connector" is more common than I thought.--Srleffler (talk) 04:02, 15 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support hyphenation, oppose any ENGVAR changes in any article. These should be discussed individually, as should any title change that is not a straightforward addition of a hyphen. SpinningSpark 14:24, 17 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Support hyphenation, oppose summary ENGVAR change without individual discussion. If fibre optic gyroscope should be moved back per ENGVAR, that's fine, but that discussion should happen on that article's talk page. CThomas3 (talk) 15:44, 22 August 2019 (UTC)[reply]
