Stub

I think this article should be labelled as a stub. There was more in the fishing article than this one. I think we should emphasise the importance of the increase of coastal territory of coastal countries worldwide to 20 nautical miles implemented by the United Nations. It is important because countries wanted more control over their continental shelves to prevent foreign trawlers from destroying their ecosystems and thus their fisheries. For Canada it came too late. Our Atlantic Canada's most important fish, cod, became illegal to fish in 1992 due to critically low populations. That resulted in an economic collapse in the maritime provinces. I would add all this but I can't source it at the moment. If anyone else can feel free.

what about including links to fish farming. increasingly inland production of ocean life is changing where we get our food, i know shrimp, crawfish, catfish, salmon, and mussels are commonly grown in tanks or in flooded fields now

Fish factory redirect needed. I failed to quickly find any fish processing wikipedia articles. Please do something. OK. I decided to handle it myself, since it seems like there is a mess now. True fishermen catch fish. Those who cannot catch fish, teach others how to catch fish. Those who cannot teach how to catch, write wikipedia article. `'Miikka 00:22, 27 June 2007 (UTC)

"traditional sector"

Is it just me, or doesn't the inclusion of "traditional fishing" in an article that is supposed to deal with a global industry appear slightly misplaced here? One could even speculate that we are dealing with a particularly silly case of romanticization in order to play down the scope of what we are really talking about. For me, at any rate, this is highly irritating. -- Kku (talk) 10:43, 17 February 2020 (UTC)

Relationship with fishery

Could we make it clearer already in the lead of this article how it is related to the fishery article? I see a bit of overlap between the two articles. It would be good to make them match together like a puzzle piece. Is the fishing industry article regarded as a sub-article to fishery? EMsmile (talk) 14:31, 18 August 2021 (UTC)

Includes recreational fishery ...

I see the FAO has chosen to include something they call recreational in "fishing industry". This has got the article into quite a tangle, as we sensibly distinguish industry from recreational angling (but we weirdly have a separate article on Commercial fishing, what is that about? Sounds like a merger would be in order there), and have carefully NOT talked about recreational in this article. But ...

The only sense I can make of this mess is that when John Doe goes out for a nice relaxing day alone by the river with his rod, that's pure recreation, definitely not industrial fishing, so out of scope of this article. But when he goes down the angling shop and buys his gear, he's making use of a branch of the industry that supplies fishing equipment. And when he goes out on a luxury boat to chase after tuna in the ocean, he's again using a branch of the industry that profits from recreational/sport fishing.

So, this article needs a section on recreational fishery to match the slightly surprising FAO definition. Chiswick Chap (talk) 05:52, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
