Placed this here because it's not encyclopedic in nature and I couldn't find a reference for it, but here is the simple explanation of a flight director:

A flight director turns the pilot into a "human autopilot". By following the flight director commands, the pilot is doing exactly what the autopilot would do if it were engaged.

Most pilots use the Flight Director as part of a natural transition from instrument to visual flight, or vice versa. For example, a pilot executing an instrument approach would start out on autopilot, then go hands on the control wheel, disengage the autopilot, continue to follow the flight director commands, get the airport in sight, then transition to visual flight and landing.Srilm (talk) 16:28, 27 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
