This company is notable because when it was formed in 1983, it was one of the first companies to make large volumes of information readily available via company intranets, or via CD-ROMs. Some sources mention a patented algorithm that is the basis of Folio's encryption.

What Folio did was truly ground breaking stuff in the late 1980s and early 1990s. But they were overtaken by web-based applications, which replaced the concept of intranets set up to be solely internal to a company's local area network. I realize that it is a fine line between promoting a company (which I am not) and giving their history. I'm trying to show what they did right, and what they or their various parent companies did wrong. I am being specific about the details of Folio's product, so that readers can see the mistakes and learn from them. Actually I'm a victim of their fast moving technology, albeit minor and from (I've learned) a very small part of their product line. As I did research into my own problem I soon gained an appreciation of what they did that brought success so fast. My research was done mostly in 2004, so I'm having some difficulty revisiting it all. But I'm finding some new stuff, so I hope to tell a balanced, neutral story.
