Withdrawals[edit]

There were originally 23 teams in the competition however five teams withdrew from the competition making it so that the remaining 18 teams in the tournament had to be redrawn. The five teams that withdrew were Burma, Palestine, Pakistan, Poland, and Hungary. The original draw for the preliminary round was- July 26 Luxembourg vs Afghanistan at Brighton, Ireland vs Netherlands at Portsmouth, China vs Turkey at Eastbourne, Burma vs India at Worthing, July 27 Yugoslavia vs Pakistan at Southen, Sweden vs Austria at Bournemouth, Egypt vs Denmark at Portsmouth. Error in format[edit]

In the Semi-final matches, G.B. is listed to the left and Yugoslavia to the right. Yugoslavia was the winning team in that match and should be left, according to the protocol of this article. Amandajm (talk) 00:22, 2 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Attendance discrepancy[edit]

The Wikipedia article on the Green Pond Road stadium lists the attendance of the Chine v Turkey match there as 21,708. The present article, presumably based on teh linked FIFA report, gives it as 3000. Northern winter (talk) 11:51, 25 September 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Stankovic sent off?[edit]

Some sources ([1] [2] possibly quoting the same original) claim Branko Stanković (usually misnamed "Boris Stankovic") was sent off in the final, becoming the first ever at Wembley. The FIFA page disagrees, though it names two Yugoslavs cautioned (both in the first minute, if you can believe it). The Official Report has an old-fashioned politeness that glosses over any unpleasantness; the only hints of aggro are:

With varied temperaments, the keenness to win and different ideas on body checking, occasional incidents were inevitable. What few there were, were easily outweighed by the sporting way in which the eighteen matches were played.

The Swedes were not put out of their stride in the Final by the intricate and often bewildering pattern-weaving of the Yugoslavs. They continued to play football according to their plans. They were the first to recover after one or two players on both sides had been carried away by the excitement of the moment. (Maybe there really was a first-minute dust-up?)

Official report[edit]

Other titbits from the official report:

"The Egyptians were another fancied side to fall victims to Denmark. Accustomed to hard, dry grounds, they met the Danes on a wet evening ... The Egyptians would be very hard to beat on their own grounds."
Turkey played "without boots, as did nine of the Indian team".
"China and Korea, both small players, overdid the close passing, and lacked stamina because they were accustomed to matches of shorter duration than ninety minutes."
"As it was the English close season there were no strong club sides, amateur or professional, apart from the Metropolitan Police, able to fill the gap. As a result, the competitors played friendly matches among themselves to provide practice."

Stadium capacities[edit]

I've removed the capacities again as they're clearly wrong. The obvious points are:

Ilford's capacity is given was 3,500 (the current capacity), yet the two attendances at the ground were 17,000 and 8,000. Similarly, the attendances at Griffin Park and Champion Hill are far above the capacities given.
The figures given appear to largely the current capacities of the extant stadiums and the final capacities of the defunct stadiums. As an example, Wembley's capacity is given as 82,000, which was the capacity after it was converted to an all-seater stadium. Until then it was 100,000 (or higher). Similarly Craven Cottage's capacity is given as 25,700, which is the currently capacity not what it would have been in the 1940s. The only ones that appear possibly correct are Highbury and Green Pond Road, although the latter looks suspicious as it's exactly the same figure as the record attendance.

It was claimed in the edit summary that the capacities were "in line with IOC games report", but I cannot find any reference in the report to the capacities. And even if they were listed in there, they are clearly wrong given the evidence above. Number 5 7 21:42, 18 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]
