Untitled[edit]

The list of international organisations does not appear to be accurate. In particular, it listed Finland as being a member of the G6 (now known as G8) and the G10, neither of which it is part of. There are probably other errors as well, but I don't know enough about this topic to be sure.

NAM (the Non Aligned Movement, of which Finland is not a member)

Inmarsat (a company providing satellite communications - national telecoms companies are shareholders, but it's hardly an international organisation) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 147.188.107.50 (talk) 12:47, 26 June 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Updating[edit]

The article (specifically the "Palestine" section) seems to have not been updated since some time in October. Additionally, it seems to have poor grammar, which I am fixing up as best as I can, but unfortunately the intended meaning may be lost in the process. I would appreciate it if someone more versed in Finland and its relations with Palestine could fact-check things. Thanks. HaiyaTheWin IS The Win! 03:20, 22 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Re-section[edit]

I'm going to add a "History" section, and the contents will come from the relations with the Soviet Union. --Vuo 21:25, 19 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Disputes - international?[edit]

It says "none" but CIA World Factbook now includes the following: "various groups in Finland advocate restoration of Karelia and other areas ceded to the Soviet Union, but the Finnish Government asserts no territorial demands". Should this be added? —The preceding unsigned comment was added by 80.222.50.237 (talk) 11:55, 17 March 2007 (UTC).[reply]

There are always marginal groups that have unpopular ideas. Opinion polls show that the majority of Finns don't support the annexation of Karelia. The economic strain and resulting the large Russian minority in Finland would be too much. No serious political party (with seats in the parliament) supports or advocates the idea. --Vuo 23:07, 18 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed WikiProject - Bilateral relations[edit]

There is now a upstart WikiProject to establish a concensus about WP's International bilateral relations articles, including "X-Y (country) relations" articles, at Wikipedia:Centralized discussion/Bilateral international relations. Interested parties should add their names at Wikipedia:WikiProject International relations/Bilateral relations task force if they wish to play a part in the discussions or have an Interest in this going forward. Thank you for your attention. CaribDigita (talk) 00:11, 30 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How is it possible that it's not even mentioned even if the whole phenomenon is named after Finland? --Sigmundur (talk) 09:06, 7 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

That is a good question. Regarding the Cold War era, the current version of the article feels like it’s based on Finnish schoolbooks from the 1980s, heavily stressing Finland’s neutrality and western orientation. Both of those were indeed set as goals, but only partially made a reality. – However, it is very hard to give a concise, unbiased account of Finlandization, and extremely difficult to write one so that it gives the right idea to “outsiders”. On one hand, Finland remained a Nordic-type market economy through the whole era and never lost its western-type democratic state apparatus, and after 1956 there were no Soviet troops stationed on Finnish soil. On the other hand, Finland had to sign the 1948 treaty with the USSR. The explicit content of the treaty, to my limited knowledge, was a lot milder than that of the similar treaties signed between the USSR and the Warsaw Pact countries. However, the symbolic significance of the treaty was enormous, and it did include at least one point that threatened Finland with the possibility of a preemptive Soviet occupation under certain circumstances. As a result of the pact, as well as of the USSR’s ability to exercise economical and diplomatical pressure on Finland, not to mention various strong personal-level political ties between the two countries over the decades, Finland was unable to lead a completely independent foreign policy. Its domestic policy was somewhat affected as well, although the degree of this can be debated. As an extreme simplification: anti-Soviet views never became illegal in Finland, but depending on the context and the decade, voicing them could severely harm an individual’s career opportunities. – Considering all of this, I think the 1948 treaty should be mentioned in the history section as an after-WW-II landmark, not merely in passing as a part of the changes triggered by the dissolution of the USSR. Likewise, the concept of Finlandization/Finlandisation should be introduced in the history section, not just mentioned in passing under contemporary Finland–Russia relations. Perhaps the most neutral timeline point of introducing the idea would be in connection with the 1958 “Night Frost Crisis”, even though the term spread into wide usage a decade later or so. Also in general, the Finnish de facto dependence of the USSR between 1944 and 1991 should be moderately stressed. – However, considering the unique and complicated nature of the Finno–Soviet relations, it could make sense to omit analyzing these problems here, and instead just link to the relevant articles. – Jippe (talk) 13:08, 18 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations[edit]

I have just created the page Permanent Representative of Finland to the United Nations, and this article should probably link to it, but I'm not really sure as to where the link would be best placed, so I'll just notify you all that this article now exists - link it as you see fit. -- = ? 19:09, 3 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]
