Title[edit]

The reason this page is titled "Formosan Expedition" instead of the "Taiwan expedition of 1867" is because Americans at this time in history referred to the island as Formosa.--Az81964444 (talk) 11:23, 15 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There are a lot of terms that were used in the old days that we don't use any more. I'd suggest this should be one of them. 155.213.224.59 (talk) 16:35, 18 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, it's fine. — LlywelynII 02:18, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

American [anything] success[edit]

Er, no. It was simply a failure from every angle one might look at it. Davidson is not an unbiased source, even if anything he said supported the idea this was a victory... which he doesn't really. — LlywelynII 02:18, 15 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Paiwan victory ? Am I missing something.
They retreated "fled" at every single action a cunning plan or simply rationalisation of retreat, the so called skilled ambushes were swept away every time only inflicting a single fatality over the course of numerous actions and with the advantage of surprise. Hardly spectacular. The Naval party continued not having been halted until they decided to head back to ship after six hours of pursuit (I would have thought low on water and provisions in stifling heat in wool uniforms). As this was a punitive expedition or raid it was limited in objectives. True they did not inflict the decisive defeat on the Paiwan that was hoped for but I find difficult to believe that in the return musket volleys non were killed or injured, most likely they suffered if anything more casualties but removed their dead and wounded. "They retreated and dispersed into the jungle" after the final action. Piracy did continue until the Japanese expedition which was one of conquest and it seems was by diplomatic arrangement with the Americans. The 1867 expedition landed then chased them into the interior and then left probably not a pleasant experience for the Paiwan either. Not a glowing success but not a defeat or Paiwan victory. 82.29.135.200 (talk) 16:21, 15 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
