Australian?[edit]

Claims have surfaced that Gailey was actually a competitor for Australia, not the US [1][2][3]. Apparently he competed in the US as an Australian in 1904 then returned to Australia. He returned to the US in 1906 as an immigrant then became a US citizen. The mistake occurred because he joined a US based olympic club. It was recently uncovered and apparently official records have been updated to reflect this change of country. Presumably Wikipedia should follow suit? • @Dl2000: Notwithstanding the 2008–09 media controversy regarding Gailey's Australian citizenship and U.S. Olympic team membership, the International Olympic Committee continues to list Gailey as representing the United States in 1904. So, the question arises, why was this article converted from American English to Australian English? (Really, the only practical implications are date formats and the spelling of "medalist".) Setting aside the underlying controversy, which apparently remains to be resolved:
1. Gailey continues to be recognized by the IOC as having American "sporting nationality" for the 1904 Olympics;
2. The U.S. Olympic Committee and USA Swimming continue to list Gailey as a member of the 1904 U.S. Olympic team;
3. Gailey became a naturalized U.S. citizen;
4. Gailey lived as an American for 66+ years, and died as an American in California;
5. Australia had no recognized official presence at the 1904 Olympics;
6. Notwithstanding the manner in which it was underplayed in the 2008–09 news articles, Gailey joined the San Francisco Olympic Club and was sponsored by the club at the time of the 1904 Olympics; and
7. "Sporting nationality" and citizenship are not the same thing, either on Wikipedia or in modern international sports.
On balance, and considering the present state of circumstances, if and when the IOC changes its official recognition of Gailey from American competitor to an Australian competitor, this article should be written in Australian English; unless and until that occurs, the article should be written in American English. That's the argument, anyway. I ask for the reactions of other editors, and I am happy to abide by the consensus determined here. Dirtlawyer1 (talk) 10:19, 28 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Dirtlawyer1 asked me to give a third opinion. As for which version of English to use, it all seems rather picayune to me, but if I had to make a stand, from skimming through the list at Australian American, the general trend seems to be to use the ddmmyy format when the person left Australia as an adult. Why? Who knows, but there it is. I don't see where "medalist" vs "medallist" comes into it at all. The only problem I myself have is with the infobox nationality. That isn't what is "disputed"; he was an Australian citizen at one point, and then an American one. I'd take that out myself, or as a very distant second choice, add Australia. Have to admit not fully noticing the significant American national component to this article. However, the formatting seemed to have been stable for the past six years, set by other editor(s), and 2 of the 3 current refs were Australian-based. The SMH ref noted he "introduced the Australian crawl to America". Seems a bit more referencing and research would be useful to sort out the nationality, especially to confirm if he had any early significance as a swimmer in Australia (per first notable nationality rule of WP:OPENPARA). However, I'll be open to new referencing and/or input from other editors on this. Dl2000 (talk) 02:41, 29 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
