Removed editorial comment re "better translation". Reader can decide which is the best translation. Also, removed sales talk appended to book of readings from de Sales. Unsure as to whether I should simply remove the book -- link is to a sales page, not to a free archive. Advice? Zora (talk) 05:20, 27 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Origin of "de Sales"[edit]

We need to explain what "de Sales" refers to. It doesn't seem to have been his own family name, but nowhere are we told how he came by the name or what it refers to. -- Jack of Oz [your turn] 11:06, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Given his father has the same name, it looks like the family name to me. MidlandLinda (talk) 17:52, 13 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It is definitely a family name. Members of his family still lives in the town where he was born.--Percht (talk) 18:19, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
It comes from le "château de Sales" , meaning Castle of the"Sales", (no link with the word "sales" in English)

His family la maison de Sales was noble, it explains the "de" (meaning "from"), reserved for nobility. They probably had a domain in a city called Sales, and took their family name from it, as it was the rule for the French speaking nobility.

Probably from this city: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sales_(Haute-Savoie)

The pronunciation of "Sales" is "sal".
